Brighton coach keen on leaving immediately – Official travels to England

IF Elfsborg have Brighton & Hove Albion coach Bjorn Hamberg in their target list.

That’s according to Fotbollskanalen, who cover what has forced the Swedish club to look at the Brighton coach.

Oscar Hiljemark joined Elfsborg in June 2024 and managed 69 matches for them. He stepped down from his role to join Pisa earlier this month.

Hiljemark’s exit has seen the Allsvenskan side look for a new manager, and this is where the Brighton U18 manager comes into the picture.

He started his management career when Frösö IF appointed him as the manager in 2010. Since then, he has only worked as an assistant manager at Östersund FK, Swansea City, Brighton, Chelsea and Feyenoord.

Barring a spell with the Dutch club, the Swede worked as Graham Potter’s assistant at Östersund and three British clubs. Last August, he returned to The Amex when the Seagulls appointed him as their U18 manager.

Two months later, Sweden appointed Potter as their new manager, and Fabian Hürzeler’s side allowed him to simultaneously work with the national team. In short, he now has two jobs.

Hamberg priority target for Elfsborg

In search of a new manager, Elfsborg have their eyes set on Hamberg. In fact, the outlet has found out from several sources that he is their top of their wish list. Luckily for them, the 40-year-old is also interested to take up the new role.

Hamberg is so keen that there’s already discussions of his potential assistants, if he were to land the job.

This would have convinced the Swedish club to make advances as their director, Stefan Andreasson, has already made a trip to the UK. The report state the official had a meeting with Hamberg, while Elfsborg have been ‘working hard’ to get him out of Brighton.

As thing stand, Elfsborg haven’t managed to get him out of Brighton, and Fotbollskanalen don’t provide any further explanation.

Apart from the Brighton U18 manager, there are other candidates in the running for the Elfsborg job. For now, Hamberg is their main target, and Andreasson could intensively work on other options if Brighton were to block his exit.
