Eddie Howe has provided an update on whether Bruno Guimaraes could feature for Newcastle United this weekend.

Eddie Howe has revealed Bruno Guimaraes remains a doubt for Newcastle United’s trip to Aston Villa.

The Brazilian hobbled off during the closing stages of the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur. Toon fans immediately feared Guimaraes had aggravated the ankle injury that ruled him out for three weeks.

As it turned out, the midfielder tweaked his hamstring and Howe’s comments following the victory did little to quell the concern. Speaking to reporters post-match, the 48-year-old noted how Guimaraes was “worried” in the dressing room.

What Eddie Howe said after Tottenham Hotspur win

”I’m not sure,” Howe said when asked about the injury. “He’s a little bit worried. He said he’s never had a problem with his hamstrings before.

“So is it cramp, was it a muscle problem? It probably feels more of an injury to me but let’s wait and see and try and stay positive at this moment.”

When asked about the skipper this morning, Howe kept his cards close to his chest, claiming Newcastle are yet to learn the full extent of the injury. Reading between the lines, it would be a surprise to see Guimaraes in the starting line-up tomorrow.

“With Bruno, we're awaiting the full extent of the hamstring injury,” Howe said. “Bruno, the other night, I don't think he got the injury when he got the injury. I don't think there was any pre-injury.

“Obviously, at that stage of the game, he was getting fatigued. Maybe on a normal situation with a full bench, we would maybe have taken him off before that moment - but we didn't. We ran out of midfielders. So he stayed on the pitch and unfortunately got injured.”
