Sunderland have confirmed the departure of their sporting director today
Confirmation of Kristjaan Speakman's departure from Sunderland in a statement on Friday morning confirmed publicly what has long been known privately: Florent Ghisolfi is now the club's most influential footballing figure.
Time will be immensely kind to Speakman's tenure as the club's sporting director, and he will undoubtedly be remembered in time as one of the most important figures in Sunderland’s modern history. There were missteps along the way but Speakman fundamentally changed the course of the club's trajectory, implementing a brave recruitment model that had been deployed successfully at other clubs in English football but never at a club at this size and under such scrutiny. The success of Speakman's project can be easily understood by noting the sheer number of clubs in the EFL now trying to take the same path.
Sunderland is already a different club now to the one that won promotion from the Championship, though. Club sources were at the time of Ghisfoli's arrival eager to stress that this did not have an immediate impact on Speakman's future at the club and that was true to an extent. Many felt that this was a productive partnership that could continue into the future even until recently, but there was never any doubt that the dynamics had shifted significantly behind the scenes. Ghisolfi has been from day one an intense and hands-on figure behind the scenes, across the detail of all the footballing operation - visible both at the Stadium of Light on matchdays and at the Academy of Light on a daily basis.
Though Sunderland had long been preparing for a return to the Premier League and many of their summer targets had been scouted and assessed long in advance, it was Ghisfoli who drove the club's summer recruitment. The scale and size of Sunderland's recruitment drive took many by surprise not just in the wider game but also internally at the club: it was a sign that things were very changing quickly and Ghisfoli is very much the man who will now lead into the next era. As such it is thought that highly unlikely that Speakman will be replaced directly, with sources describing this as essentially being the end of a transitional period for the club.
The club's footballing infrastructure will likely continue to evolve over the coming months heading into another crucial summer, as Sunderland look to cement their position and build from what looks like being a very successful first season back at Premier League level. Ghisfoli has already been reshaping key departments in recent times, with the departure of head of recruitment Stuart Harvey one of the key early indicators of these changes. The club's recruitment and scouting department has since been significantly bolstered under Ghisolfi’s close watch, and it is likely that further appointments across the footballing structure will follow in the months ahead. These will be appointments that report into Ghisfoli, however, rather than sitting alongside him.

Like so many of the players who helped put the club back where it belonged, there is a cruel irony that Speakman's success in the role has essentially accelerated his departure. Sunderland's announcement marks the start of a new era even if change has for an extended period been under way, and underlines the fact that this is a fundamentally different club to a year ago. The policy of investing in and trusting in young players will remain and endure, but the tweaks seen last summer in how Sunderland operated and the level of their financial ambition were a reflection that their strategy and ambition as a Premier League club is different. Ghisolfi’s arrival in the summer was the first piece of the puzzle, and a sign that the club felt it needed new connections in the European markets and beyond that will be so vital in the years ahead.
Speakman ultimately did a sensational job - just look at the value of the squad he inherited in 2020 and compare it to the one that won promotion from Wembley in May. Ghisolfi is now tasked with cementing that legacy and taking the club to new heights.
