Newcastle United have been linked with a move for one of Sandro Tonali’s Italy teammates.

Tonali himself is facing an uncertain future at St James’ Park amid noises from the player’s representatives post-January transfer window.

The midfielder was reportedly offered to Arsenal on winter transfer deadline day and while his agent Giuseppe Riso strongly denied that was the case, his comments have only fuelled talk of a summer exit.

In the past week, there have been media reports linking Tonali with not just the Gunners, but Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus too.

Sandro Tonali’s agent addresses his client’s future at Newcastle United

“Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro, and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League,” Riso told Tuttosport last week.

“We'll evaluate and decide what to do in the summer. These transfer discussions will take place later. We'll see how the season ends and then we'll decide what to do.

“There’s no preference at the moment. It’s still early. What we’re saying today won’t apply tomorrow. Newcastle couldn’t let him go now, and there’s no point in moving, especially since Sandro is very attached to the club.”

A few days earlier, Riso also said: “We will see around March about Sandro’s valuation but only if Newcastle decide to open doors.”

Sandro Tonali has already addressed his Newcastle United future

Riso’s comments follow on from Tonali’s far from convincing response when asked about his future after the 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Club on November 5.

That is despite the 25-year-old being under contract until 2029, which includes an option of a further year, after signing an extension as a show of loyalty during his 10-month betting ban.

“This extension was three years ago after the ban,” said Tonali. “I don't know why everybody spoke about this.

“I signed after the ban for another year, and I'm happy, not just for one more year here, but I'm happy for the people, for the fans, for every player, every member of the staff here in Newcastle.

“Every day I work to win every game. I work for every person in Newcastle.”

When asked if his long-term future will be at Newcastle, Tonali replied: “This is a tough question because in football you need to think year on year.

“I don’t want to say I want to stay here 10 years and in two years, three years, four years, five years I will go. I want to think, just for me, year on year. This is football. Last summer was tough for us, for Alex (Isak), but this is football.

“If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything. I don’t want to say, ‘Yes, I want to stay here for 10 years’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”

Newcastle United linked with move for Sandro Tonali’s Italy teammate

As speculation surrounds one Italian, could another be about to replace him, or even join him on Tyneside?

Well, according to Calciomercato IT, Roma attacking midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini has emerged as a ‘sensational’ target for Newcastle and has already ‘given his approval to a potential transfer’,

Pellegrini, 29, is out of contract at Roma on June 30 and talks over an extension are said to have stalled, ‘so the path to the Premier League appears the most likely one for now’.

But here comes the truth...

As an established and experienced player for both club and country, Pellegrini is certainly a name that supporters will recognise. He has been at the heart of Roma’s starting XI for the last seven years, as well as making 36 appearances for Italy.

But even that isn’t enough to tempt Newcastle. Despite the reports in Italy, it’s believed the prospect of Pellegrini rocking up on Tyneside is extremely unlikely.
