The Sunderland first team player who will be rested in Oxford FA Cup tie

But the Sunderland head coach has promised to go "strong" with his team selection in the FA Cup fourth round tie at Oxford.

Le Bris says Sunderland's priority is the Premier League and reaching 40 to 42 points, but the head coach is also taking the FA Cup seriously and sees no reason why the Black Cats can't fight on both fronts in the final months of the season.

However, he has been closely assessing his players since the midweek defeat to Liverpool and is likely to freshen up his side where he feels necessary.

One change will come at centre-half, with Alderete almost certainly sitting the game out. That could mean another opportunity for Luke O'Nien, who started the third round tie at Everton and scored the winning penalty.

Le Bris said of Alderete: "He struggled with his foot. He got a kick two weeks ago, I think. Probably, he will rest this weekend."

January recruit Jocelin Ta Bi could be included in a matchday squad for the first time. The winger started training earlier this week after recovering from a minor ankle injury and has impressed the coaching team.

"Yes, he's ready," said Le Bris.

"He might be in the squad. He was the 21st [man, first reserve] against Liverpool. We decided to stay safe, but now he's ready."

While Ta Bi could feature, fellow January recruit Melker Ellborg is likely to have to settle for a place on the bench, with Le Bris hinting that regular No.1 Robin Roefs will wear the gloves at the Kassam Stadium.

He said: "It's not decided yet but the key message is to go strong.

"It doesn't mean that Melker is not ready. He's ready. After that, it's a question of balance."

Balance is the key word as Le Bris ponders over his team selection, with a final decision expected to be made on Saturday.

"We had a strong week with two games against two top six teams," said Le Bris, whose Sunderland side lost at Oxford in the Championship in the final stages of last season.

"It was really demanding, physically especially. We'll probably adjust the squad, but it will be important to go strong.

"I think the schedule won't be too busy during this second part of the season. It's possible to combine both [league and cup].

"Our attention is still on the league. It's really clear. We have to reach this target around 40 points, 42 maybe, because the race will be intense.

"This is our main intention. But because of the schedule, I think we can combine both. Let's try to go further.

"Like we did against Everton, we want to go strong. For the context, the last game we had at Oxford is a really good reminder. The Championship is tough, even if they are struggling in the league.

"We expect a tough game, especially in a competition like that. We'll have to show a strong version of Sunderland to be the winner at the end of the game."
