Sunderland AFC announced that they had parted ways with Kristjaan Speakman on Friday morning in a move which shocked the Stadium of Light loyals, but it seems that the sporting director's exit was always inevitable.

The banks of Wearside were rocked slightly harder than usual on Friday morning, when the bombshell broke that Kristjaan Speakman had left his post as sporting director of Sunderland AFC - with very little explanation behind the change of direction.
Joining the club at its lowest in December 2020, the 46-year-old has been a major player in Sunderland's glittering transformation over the last half a decade, working tirelessly behind the scenes to pull the Black Cats from the depths of League One to back where they belong; in the Premier League.
Don't get it twisted, without Kyril Louis-Dreyfus at the helm and with Stewart Donald and Charlie Methven still running the show, there's a remarkable chance that Sunderland would still be languishing in the lower leagues. But there's no denying the part which Speakman has played in rejigging the Red and White Army.
As a result, it will have come as a major surprise when the club announced completely out of the blue that they had parted ways with Speakman on Friday. A statement from Sunderland read: "Sunderland AFC today confirms that sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has left the club with immediate effect.
"Kristjaan was a key figure during one of the most significant periods in the club's recent history, playing an important role in bringing Sunderland back to the Premier League. Appointed in December 2020, he led a comprehensive rebuild of the club's football operations, reshaping its recruitment and performance infrastructure and restoring competitive momentum.
"His time on Wearside included three victories at Wembley Stadium, including Sunderland's first win at the national stadium since 1973 and two Play-Off Final wins. With Premier League status restored and a strengthened football leadership structure in place, the board of directors has made the decision to continue the club's journey without Kristjaan."
Louis-Dreyfus, meanwhile, said of the departing-sporting director: "Kristjaan has made an important contribution to Sunderland AFC during a period of significant transition and growth, helping to rebuild the club and restore its place in the Premier League. Strong foundations have been established throughout our football operations over the past five years, and that phase of redevelopment is now complete.

"As we look to the future, our focus is on building from that position of strength with clarity of direction and sustained progress. We are grateful for Kristjaan's commitment and professionalism and wish him every success for the future.”
The news also followed on a little over a week after Sunderland announced that assistant head coach, Luciano Vulcano, had left his post by mutual consent, despite only joining the club last summer. While Regis Le Bris soon after clarified that Vulcano struggled to find the right fit at the Stadium of Light, no explanation was really given instantly with regards to Speakman's exit.
However, it appears as though the writing has been on the wall for the Englishman since the arrival of Florent Ghisolfi as a director of football operations in July. Many fans questioned how having a sporting director and a director of football simultaneously would work, essentially given that they are practically the same post.
With a whopping 14 summer signings, having Ghisolfi and Speakman working in unison over the summer ultimately proved incredibly fruitful - far too big a task for just one person. We always knew that Sunderland had to invest heavily in their squad last summer if they had any hopes of remaining in the Premier League for 2026/27, and KLD certainly delivered on that.

However, now holding a Premier League proven squad and challenging for Europe, January's business was far tamer. The club welcomed just Jocelin Ta Bi and Nilson Angulo to the Stadium of Light, as they concentrated on offloading past servants deemed not good enough to thrive in the top flight in permanent moves, and afforded others a chance to develop elsewhere on loan.
Of course, Sunderland will be expected to bring in even more fresh faces this summer when the window reopens, but fans shouldn't get too excited about the prospect of a complete club overhaul once more now that they have shown not only that they can survive in the Premier League, but also thrive.
As a result, the need for essentially two sporting directors becomes redundant, and with Ghisolfi holding far more worldwide experience at the highest levels than Speakman, it wasn't a straightforward case of last-in, first-out at the Academy of Light.
In what seems like a cruel move on the face of things, football is an incredibly unforgiving sport in which clubs are constantly trying to build for bigger and better things. And while Speakman's work should be applauded by fans of the Black Cats, his time has simply run its course, as KLD looks to the next step of Sunderland's journey with a more experienced director alongside him.
