Eberechi Eze 'looked lost' against Brentford as Arsenal issue becomes clear

Eberechi Eze has endured a testing run of form since joining Arsenal from Crystal Palace last summer with Alan Shearer even going as far as saying he 'looked lost' against Brentford.

Eberechi Eze looked as if he "needed the world to swallow him up" against Brentford, according to Alan Shearer.

Arsenal travelled to the Gtech Community Stadium to take on the Bees on Thursday evening with hopes of expanding their lead at the top of the Premier League table. However, what ensued on the night was a 1-1 draw between the two London clubs, with goals coming from Noni Madueke and Keane Lewis-Potter.

While he was initially named in Mikel Arteta's Starting XI, Eze failed to make much of a mark against Brentford, subbed off at half-time for Martin Odegaard. And Premier League legend, Shearer, didn't like what he saw from the Englishman on the night.

Speaking via Betfair, Shearer said: "Mikel Arteta has got one or two things that he needs to iron out. I mean, the situation with Eze against Brentford was surprising a bit because he seems lost or at least he did in that game.

"He took him off at half time and they got a little bit better. They put more pressure on Brentford and then they got the goal.

"But I thought Brentford were worth their point at least. Eze looks lost. It's remarkable really, isn't it? The guy we're talking about who scored the hat-trick in the North London Derby.

"Everyone was thinking, wow, what a player he is and what a time he's going to have at Arsenal. The way he sort of walked out full of confidence in that Arsenal stadium when he got his move and he looked as if he was a natural fit and, and belonged there.

"But he looked lost against Brentford. He looked as if he needed the world to swallow him up. He didn't look comfortable at all.

"He won't be in the England squad if he's not going to be playing. I think that was his first start from mid-December last year as well. He's hardly had any starts as well and that has to change if he's going to get in the England squad."

A dominant force for large parts of the season, it comes as the third Premier League match that the Gunners have dropped points from in their last five. Arteta's outfit were held to a goalless draw by a struggling Nottingham Forest in mid-January, before suffering a 3-2 upset loss to Manchester United the following week.

As a result, the club now sit just four points ahead of Pep Guardiola's resurgent Manchester City, as the race for the Premier League title heats up. Should Arsenal succeed in their endeavours, it will mark the first league title the club has secured since the 'invincibles' season of 2003/04.

However, with 12 matches left to play - including outings with Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester City - the title still remains a little way from north London at the time of writing.
