Manager West Ham once wanted is currently the name every club is talking about

Former West Ham United managerial target – VfB Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness – is currently the name every club is talking about, according to the Independent journalist Miguel Delaney.

West Ham made internal checks on the German back in November 2024 as they looked to replace Julen Lopetegui at the London Stadium club at the time.

However, the Hammers appointed Graham Potter to succeed the Spaniard after sacking him in January 2025.

Potter was fired last September, with Nuno Espirito Santo replacing him, but the Portuguese was briefly under pressure after West Ham found themselves in a relegation battle.

Three wins and one draw in their last five Premier League games have bought Nuno more time as he looks to steer the Hammers towards safety, but could life have been different for West Ham under Hoeness?

Delaney claimed in his ‘Inside Football’ bi-weekly newsletter today that the 43-year-old is the coaching name every club is now discussing.

The former TSG Hoffenheim boss helped Stuttgart win the DFB Pokal in 2024-25, and while he is very talented, he has not yet done much.

His side are currently fifth in the Bundesliga after finishing ninth last term and second in 2023-24.

Hoeness took over Stuttgart in April 2023, leading them from the bottom of the league table into the relegation play-offs of the 2022-23 campaign.

They defeated Hamburg to stay up and his stocks have continued to rise since then.

West Ham could do with such a manager but the Premier League is a cut-throat league where many brilliant head coaches struggle to impress.

Nuno will hold on to his job for now as he looks to keep the Hammers up, and their chances are high with just three points and five points between them and 17th-place Nottingham Forest and 16th-place Tottenham Hotspur, respectively, after 26 games.
