Sunderland made an attempt to sign CA Osasuna’s Víctor Muñoz in the winter market.
That’s according to Diario de Navarra, who make it clear it’s their own information about Sunderland.
On January 28th, Sport Witness covered Spanish claims of Tottenham Hotspur wanting to pay €40m immediately in the winter market. Spurs weren’t able to get the deal over the line.
Sunderland submitted offer for Muñoz
Diario de Navarra now cover Sunderland’s efforts to bring the 22-year-old to the Stadium of Light in January.
The Black Cats made multiple offers to secure his services in the last window. The Premier League side first proposed €20m and then improved their bid. The renewed bid included a €25m fee plus Eliezer Mayenda moving in the opposite direction on loan until the end of the season.
Régis Le Bris hasn’t utilised 20-year-old Mayenda regularly this season. He played 577 minutes from 14 matches, and it includes only six starts. Two months ago, Sport Witness relayed claims from Germany of unnamed Bundesliga side’s interest.
The striker doesn’t seem to be part of Le Bris’ core plans at Sunderland, who offered him to the La Liga side. However, both Osasuna and Muñoz weren’t tempted by the English club’s proposal.
Why Osasuna rejected Sunderland offer
According to the newspaper, agents informed Muñoz of Sunderland’s offer, but he wasn’t keen on leaving his current club midway through the season.
He arrived from Real Madrid in July 2025, and Los Blancos still hold 50% of his rights. Therefore, Osasuna were also not keen on accepting Sunderland’s bid and pointed to the Spaniard’s €40m release clause.
Diario de Navarra say Le Bris’ side sent this offer two days before the window closed. The report further adds Sunderland only made verbal offers and Muñoz and his club turned it down.
The attacker has scored five goals and contributed four assists from 25 matches in all competitions this season. Last summer, AC Milan tried to sign him but snubbed them for Osasuna.
