Bruno Guimaraes bombshell as Newcastle United learn extent of their captain’s hamstring injury.
The Magpies’ skipper started against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night on just his second start following four matches out with an ankle injury.
Guimaraes helped United to a 2-1 victory in North London before being forced off in stoppage time.
Speaking after the game, head coach Eddie Howe said: “I'm not sure, he is a little bit worried. I think that he's not sure [because] he said he's never had a problem with his hamstrings before, so is it cramp? Was it a muscle problem?
“Probably feels more of an injury to me, but let's wait and see.”
Guimaraes then wrote on Instagram: “Very happy with the win! This looks much more like what we’re capable of doing. Great character from the team. Once again, I hope it’s nothing too serious and that I can be back soon.”
Bruno Guimaraes bombshell as Newcastle United without skipper for at least two months
Howe provided a further update on Guimaraes on Friday morning ahead of Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
“With Bruno, we're awaiting the full extent of the hamstring injury,” Howe said. “Bruno, the other night, I don't think he got the injury when he got the injury. I don't think there was any pre-injury.
“Obviously, at that stage of the game, he was getting fatigued. Maybe on a normal situation with a full bench, we would maybe have taken him off before that moment - but we didn't. We ran out of midfielders. So he stayed on the pitch and unfortunately got injured.”
After going under further assessment, ESPN Brazil have claimed the Magpies will be without Guimaraes for “at least two months”, keeping him sidelined until the middle of April.
It means Newcastle will have to find a way without their talisman until the final month of the campaign. Howe’s side have never won a Premier League match without Guimaraes since he joined the club in January 2022.
As well as missing several key matches for United, Guimaraes will also sit out of Brazil’s upcoming friendly matches against France and Croatia.
It’s claimed Guimaraes will soon travel to Brazil to receive treatment from Rodrigo Lasmar, the national team doctor.
