Aston Villa hit with another injury blow as "excellent" star's return date now in doubt

Aston Villa have been dealt another injury blow ahead of their FA Cup clash against Newcastle United this weekend, with a return date unclear.

Emery praises Aston Villa's strong "versatility"

For all their limitations when it comes to spending courtesy of PSR rules, Aston Villa have dealt with their mounting injury problems with much admiration as of late. Unai Emery's side have seen their Premier League title ambitions fade, but are still in cruise control when it comes to securing Champions League qualification.

Aston Villa's injuries Potential Return Date

Youri Tielemans - Ankle injury 18/04/2026

Boubakar Kamara - Knee injury 01/06/2026

John McGinn - Knee injury 04/03/2026

It's Emery's midfield which has been hit the worst, with three of his main stars all currently sidelined - forcing the Spaniard to turn towards those versatile enough to fill in.

The Aston Villa boss had his say on his side's current injury problems in the build-up to Aston Villa's FA Cup clash against Newcastle this weekend, telling reporters: "I (have) had this problem a lot of times. And how I needed to take the decision, building the team, trying some players…with the possibility to play different positions, being versatile.

Ranked: The 10 greatest FA Cup upsets of all time

The FA Cup is famous for its giant-killing moments, but which are the greatest upsets in the competition's history?

"Now, I don’t have another issue different than I had before…in other countries and other clubs, or even here. And other teams, as well, they have this problem with players being injured.

“Lamare Bogarde, for example, is (a) very good possibility and getting good performance with us progressively. When I arrived here, three years and a half (ago), he was here. He was in the academy, he was training with us, he was going on loan. Now, how he’s performing and playing as a right full-back."

Bogarde will likely have to do a job once again this weekend too, following yet another injury blow for the Villans.

Aston Villa dealt Matty Cash injury blow

As revealed by Emery, Aston Villa could now be without Matty Cash against Newcastle and beyond. The Spaniard couldn't provide an exact return date, sparking more concerns for those in the Midlands.

"He was injured, with a small injury. I don't know if he will be available for Saturday. Each day is important for how he is progressing."

The injury comes at a frustrating time for Cash, who has been back to his best after an inconsistent campaign last season. The Poland international has once again cemented his place on the right of Emery's back four, but could now be forced to watch on from the sidelines this weekend.

Matty Cash scores for Aston Villa vs Arsenal

Dubbed "excellent" by The Telegraph's Matt Law, it's not often that Cash misses out for Aston Villa these days. In fact, out of 26 Premier League games this season, he's missed just two. One through suspension and one through injury, which came against Brighton last time out.

The race is heating up...

He has become one of the most reliable players under Emery, despite previous doubts, and Aston Villa could struggle to have the same attacking intent down their right-hand side without him.
