Gomez has score to settle as he keeps his head up for Liverpool

The Paraguay midfielder impressed at Aston Villa in midweek and says the squad remain in good spirits.

Gomez’s endeavour down the right encapsulated the Albion mood on a night when they deserved some reward.

And the noisy away fans down that side in the second half seemed to appreciate it.

He told The Argus: “I’m a bit sad for the result. We deserved to win but these are things which happen in football.

“We played a good match but we need to keep going with our heads up.

“We think the team are fine and now we have to think about taking on Saturday game.”

Asked what head coach Fabian Hurzeler has called for from his team, Gomez said: “The attitude more than anything.

“You could see the team wanted a positive result.

“I have gone through this sort of run before but they are things which pass.

“There are times when you play well, times you play badly and times when things just don’t come off.

“You take these times head on with your head up.

“Despite being on a bad run, I think we have always kept our heads high.

“There has never been a dip in that sense.

“We have always taken on thing in the best way.”

Albion stayed on the road after the Villa game, training and spending time together at St George’s Park.

Gomez said: “I think we are more than united, despite the results.

“We always have our heads high and a positive mentality.”

Albion trailed almost from kick-off when they visited Liverpool in the league just before Christmas.

Gomez had a good chance saved by Alisson in the quest for an equaliser and later missed an open goal right in front of the away fans.

They now return for the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Gomez said: “I had a good chance there and it was a real shame not to score. These are things that happen.

“This will be a very tough game. It will be a hard game for them as well.

“We want to give something to the fans who always support us and are always with us.”
