Newcastle United will be without Bruno Guimaraes until April due to a hamstring injury.
Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has been ruled out until April with a hamstring injury.
Guimaraes was forced off in stoppage time during Tuesday night’s 2-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur. The Brazilian was making his second start after missing four matches with an ankle problem.
Speaking immediately after the game, head coach Eddie Howe said: “I'm not sure, he is a little bit worried. I think that he's not sure [because] he said he's never had a problem with his hamstrings before, so is it cramp? Was it a muscle problem?
“Probably feels more of an injury to me, but let's wait and see.”
Guimaraes then reacted on Instagram with the caption: “I hope it’s nothing too serious and that I can be back soon.”
Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes ruled out until April
On Friday morning, Howe revealed the club were still waiting to learn the full extent of the injury. By the evening, reports in Brazil, via ESPN, confirmed Guimaraes would be sidelined until April.
Guimaraes will sit out of at least eight matches, including the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland, plus additional Champions League and FA Cup matches should the Magpies advance past Qarabag and Aston Villa, respectively.
The 28-year-old wil also miss Brazil’s friendly matches against France and Croatia with the hope he can return after the March international break.
Bruno Guimaraes’ agent sends message as Newcastle United injury blow confirmed
Not only is it a huge blow for Newcastle, who have never won a Premier League game that Guimaraes has missed since he joined from Lyon in January 2022, it is also a huge blow for the midfielder.
Guimaraes has only ever missed 10 matches for the Magpies through injury.
Reacting to the news, Guimaraes’ agent, Alexis Malavolta wrote on X: “You will come back stronger.”
Joelinton and Lewis Miley latest
Guimaraes’ extended absence has left Sandro Tonali, Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock as the only fit and available senior central midfielders.
Joelinton and Lewis Miley have been missing in recent games but Howe hopes the pair aren’t too far away from returning.
“With Lewy, we're waiting sort of day by day,” Howe said. “He's got a sort of a dead leg. So he got a bad knock to his thigh. I think there's a little bit of muscle damage on the knock.
“So sort of having scans on it sort of every few days to see how that is. We don't think it's going to be long-term. Hopefully, he'll be back pretty quickly. So let's wait and see on that one.
“Joelinton is doing really well. I don't think he'll make this game, but he's not going to be too far away beyond this game. So he's desperate to be back involved as he normally is, but that's a great sign for us.
“That means he's feeling good about his body and he's very positive.”
