Ratings vs Burton: Monsters more like mice and star is a 'passenger' but hero saves the day

West Ham needed extra-time to see off lower league opposition for the second FA Cup tie in a row as in-form Crysencio Summerville saved the day in a 1-0 victory over League One Burton Albion.

TNT Sports clearly felt West Ham’s FA Cup fourth round tie at League One Burton Albion was a potential banana skin.

Especially after the Hammers needed extra-time to get past QPR in the third round.

Crysencio Summerville started his brilliant goalscoring streak in West Ham’s 2-1 win that day.

Now, a month later in the fourth round, Summerville was scoring his sixth goal in as many games to help the Hammers into the hat for the last 16.

The winger was brought on as a late sub on 83 minutes. And he made yet another decisive contribution, jinking down the wing before cutting inside, drifting across the edge of the box and firing home via a deflection.

Hero Summerville saves the day with sixth goal in as many games

While Burton never really had West Ham on the ropes, they were probably the better side overall, especially in the first half.

Nuno Espirito Santo made 10 changes to the line-up from the team which started the draw with Man United.

That raised eyebrows and pre-match concerns from the likes of former West Ham star Joe Cole proved well-founded as the team struggled to gel.

Burton had a few half chances as the game wore on in extra-time, especially in the last minute of stoppage time.

But while Summerville saved the day, West Ham’s midfield monsters looked more like mice and one star was a ‘passenger’.

West Ham player ratings vs Burton Albion:

Alphonse Areola, 7.5/10: Had to deal with a number of crosses and long set-pieces into the box and was faultless after being dropped for the last two Premier League games.

Kyle Walker-Peters, 6/10: Solid enough defensively but offered little to nothing going forward as Aaron Wan-Bissaka does.

Konstantinos Mavropanos, 8/10: Probably West Ham’s best player overall on the day, the big Greek has been much improved of late and he won absolutely everything that came his way.

Max Kilman, 7/10: The much-criticised defender was back in the side and did his job in keeping a clean sheet but was barely tested.

Ezra Mayers, 7/10: Youngster did his cause no harm at all with a fine display. His pace meant Burton were never a threat with balls over the top and West Ham could play a higher defensive line.

Ollie Scarles, 6/10: One of the culprits in West Ham throwing away the 1-0 lead to draw 1-1 with Man United in the last game, Scarles did ok but was subbed off.

Summerville peerless at the Pirelli!

West Ham United's Dutch striker #07 Crysencio Summerville (R) celebrates scoring the team's first goal during the FA Cup fourth round football match between Burton Albion and West Ham United at the Pirelli stadium in Burton Upon-Trent, central England on February 14, 2026.

Soungoutou Magassa, 5/10: The big French midfielder was labelled a ‘destroyer’ by Gary Neville after he put in a man of the match display and scored in a draw at Old Trafford. Magassa has barely featured since then, though, finding himself on the Hammers bench. There were rumours he might leave in January which baffled fans who think he looks a top player in the making. Magassa remained and got his chance at Burton but looked extremely rusty. In fact he was miles off it for much of the game, although grew into the match later on.

Mohamadou Kante, 5/10: West Ham fans are extremely excited about Kante and his cameos for the first team have been impressive, as have his goals and displays for the Under 21s. Dubbed a midfield ‘monster’, Kante – like Magassa – looked more like mice.

Adama Traore, 5/10: A player with Traore’s attributes should – on paper at least – be ripping a struggling League One team apart. Another of West Ham’s midfield monsters who failed to shine. Subbed off.

Keiber Lamadrid, 6.5/10: The little-known Venezuelan impressed with some of his runs and touches. He looks to have the attributes to help West Ham in the Premier League but perhaps as an impact sub rather than starter. Subbed off.

Callum Wilson, 5/10: Worked hard but was labelled a ‘passenger’ by ex West Ham star Rob Green and he wasn’t wrong for much of the game. Had a couple of chances to get a shot off on goal but delayed pulling the trigger.

SUBS:

Crysencio Summerville, 9/10: It says a lot about West Ham’s performance that Summerville was probably West Ham’s man of the match despite not coming on until the 83rd minute of this extra-time win. The flying Dutchman made it six goals in as many games for West Ham with what proved to be the winner. Could and should have added a second late on but placed the ball wide. On fire.

Freddie Potts, 5/10: Came on as a sub in the 71st minute and was instantly on the referee’s bad side with a number of late challenges and barges when the ball had gone. Made a very rash tackle which the ref deemed to be worthy of a red card rather than the yellow he was going to dish out originally. More clumsy than malicious.

Taty Castellanos, 6.5/10: Worked hard as always, showed some nice touches but had very little impact on the tie.

Axel Disasi, 8/10: Big score despite only coming on at half-time of extra-time and that was because he made a brilliant clearance to stop an almost certain equaliser. Celebrated like he had scored which bodes well for West Ham defensively going forward.

Lewis Orford, 6/10: Youngster was not involved enough to merit any more than the standard score but made one or two interceptions and was comfortable on the ball.
