Five things learned from West Ham 1-0 Burton as Keiber Lamadrid makes debut and fan protests…

West Ham United beat Burton 1-0 to progress into the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in three years on Saturday.

Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side were not at all convincing and were again taken to extra-time in the FA Cup, but a Crysencio Summerville goal in the 95th minute sent West Ham United through to Monday’s draw.

It was far from a vintage display and the fact the Hammers were taken to extra-time is hardly a ringing endorsement of the performance. Still, just as they did against QPR in the last round, Nuno’s side got the job done.

Tell us what you thought of a nervy FA Cup win

West Ham United's Dutch striker #07 Crysencio Summerville (R) celebrates scoring the team's first goal during the FA Cup fourth round football match between Burton Albion and West Ham United at the Pirelli stadium in Burton Upon-Trent, central England on February 14, 2026.

Here are five things that Hammers News learned.

West Ham United win ugly once again

It’s difficult to imagine too many people getting excited about the victory, and that is perfectly understandable.

Still, this was a West Ham side who saw their character questioned not all that long ago.

They had to grind it out, just as they did against QPR in the last round. Even a few weeks ago, can anyone seriously have backed the Irons to do that?

It wasn’t pretty but the job was done, while key players got a rest.

Freddie Potts set to miss crucial games for West Ham after red card

Freddie Potts might not start regularly for West Ham right now but he’s still a useful option.

Indeed, Nuno brought him in for Pablo Felipe against Manchester United, with the forward’s injury causing a change in shape.

Now, however, even that specific option isn’t available to Nuno. Potts was sent off in extra time for a bad tackle on Julian Larsson and will now miss West Ham’s games against Bournemouth, Liverpool and Fulham.

Tough day for Keiber Lamadrid

January signing Keiber Lamadrid made his Hammers debut on Saturday and tried his best, without setting the world alight.

The Venezuela international wasn’t expected to get much game time this season and not much about his performance would suggest he’s ready for the Premier League just yet.

However, the 22-year-old did at least try to make things happen. Not everything came off and it wasn’t a dream debut, but it came in difficult circumstances.

Lack of convincing squad depth exposed

Nuno made ten changes to his West Ham side for the game following the Premier League draw with Manchester United on Tuesday.

As such, it was perhaps understandable that the Hammers appeared to lack much rhythm.

Still, that is a generous reading. By and large, none of the players brought into the side offered much to suggest they should be starting on a regular basis.

West Ham fans continue in protest ahead of crucial meeting

Burton vs West Ham was delayed due to one of the goal nets becoming loose.

During that time, West Ham fans staged a peaceful protest. A plane carrying a protest banner reading “SULLIVAN & BRADY OUT – NO MORE BS” flew above the Pirelli Stadium.

Later this month, vice-chair Karren Brady will hold a Fan Advisory Board meeting with supporters where they will air their grievances about where the club is going under Brady and majority shareholder David Sullivan.

Supporters in the ground then held up a banner reading: “Time to sell. Name your price. BS out”.
