Unai Emery admits that Marco Bizot must learn from his mistake, which cost Aston Villa in their 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Newcastle.
Villa took the lead in the 14th minute through Tammy Abraham, who finished past Aaron Ramsdale after being set up by Douglas Luiz from a cleverly disguised free-kick.
However, Bizot’s lapse just before half-time proved costly, as he recklessly brought down Jacob Murphy during a Newcastle counter-attack.
Although the foul occurred some distance from goal, referee Chris Kavanagh did not hesitate to show a straight red card to the goalkeeper.
“Marco is always playing so, so focused and performing fantastic,” Emery said in his press conference.
“The red card is a difficult circumstance for him. I can’t complain to him. It’s something to get as an experience to learn. We will try to improve in everything we are building, even with a bad result today.”
The match officials got a few key decisions wrong on the night, two of which involved Lucas Digne.
He was fortunate to avoid a red card for a tackle on Jacob Murphy, and should have conceded a penalty after a handball inside the box, which was instead incorrectly awarded as a Newcastle free-kick.
“Today VAR makes sense. VAR is necessary to help the referees,” Emery admitted after full-time.
Villa will now focus on the two remaining competitions they are in this season - the Premier League and Europa League.
Sitting third in the league with 12 games to play, Villa’s target is to return to the Champions League and win silverware in the form of the Europa League.
