Aston Villa are rivalling Newcastle for the signing of this free agent at the request of Unai Emery
The versatile 26-year-old is approaching the end of his contract with La Liga side Celta Vigo and clubs are now lining up to discuss potential summer transfers with him.
‘Significant interest’ has emerged from the Premier League, while clubs in Europe are also exploring the option of signing Mingueza at the end of this season. Naturally, the appeal of signing an experienced defender for free has reached many.
Aston Villa ‘pushing hard’ for Oscar Mingueza
According to Fichajes, Aston Villa are among the Premier League clubs who are ‘pushing hard’ to try and sign Mingueza this summer when he becomes a free agent. Latest FA Cup opponents Newcastle are also in the picture.
The Spanish international is a right-back by trade but he can also play centrally within the defence, making him an attractive target on the versatility front. This season, Mingueza has played on both the left and right as a full-back and wing-back when required.
Juventus are said to be currently leading the race to sign the defender but the interest at Aston Villa seems to be deep-rooted. The pursuit of Mingueza is reportedly at the ‘specific request’ of Unai Emery. The manager ‘greatly values’ the player’s tactical intelligence across multiple areas on the pitch.
Emery sees Mingueza as an ‘ideal fit’ to boost his defensive options moving forwards. The Celta Vigo star is also being considered as a candidate for midfield at Villa Park, which adds another string to his bow.
Mingueza has a goal and four assists on his tally so far this season. He came through Barcelona’s youth system before making a permanent move to Celta Vigo in 2022 as a free agent.
