Bruno Guimaraes releases statement as Newcastle United confirm major injury blow.

The Magpies beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Tuesday but the night ended on a negative note after Guimaraes limped off in stoppage time.

On Friday morning, Eddie Howe revealed the club were still waiting to learn the full extent of the injury. By the evening, reports in Brazil, via ESPN, suggested Guimaraes would be sidelined for two months.

And following yesterday’s 3-1 FA Cup fourth round win at Aston Villa, Howe confirmed those reports to be true.

Newcastle United issue official Bruno Guimaraes injury update

In Guimaraes’ absence, Sandro Tonali stepped up to score a brace at Villa Park while Nick Woltemade, who dropped into the midfield alongside the Italian and Jacob Ramsey, netted his first goal since December.

Speaking after the game, Howe said: “I think the time frame will be the time frame really on this injury, I don't think there's any miracle cure for him. I think it will be a couple of months, as you say, we're probably looking at the end of the international in March for his return.

“Massive blow for us, key stage of the season, he's devastated but it is what it is, we can't do anything about it, we just have to try and get him back safely and other players have to step up in his absence and I felt they did that today.

“Look at our midfield three today in Nick Woltemade, Ramsey and Tonali and I thought we were excellent.”

“We're going to miss Bruno's many, many strengths,” Howe added. “He's multi-talented and that's why he's such a special player.

“This season, he's scored goals, created goals, controlled games for us and that's why taking him out of the team for any length of time is such a negative for us, but I always believe there's a way without someone, then other players have to step up and they have to give different qualities.

“And that's why I thought Nick Woltemade did really well today because he added a flair factor and a technical aspect to our midfield and also a physical presence and a goalscoring instinct, which he showed in his goals.

“There are many positives from today from our midfield's performance.”

Bruno Guimaraes issues message to Newcastle United fans after injury blow

Guimaraes will miss up to 11 games for Newcastle, providing they beat Qarabag to progress into the last 16 of the Champions League. Prior to the Aston Villa game, the 28-year-old had only missed 10 games for the club.

Taking to Instagram, Guimaraes wrote: “As previously reported, for the first time in 10 years of my career, I will have to spend some time away from the pitch. I’m very saddened, but certain that god knows all things.

“A muscle injury will keep me out for a few weeks, but it will help strengthen me and ensure I’m even more prepared for what lies ahead. Thank you all for the support, messages and concern. See you soon.”
