Newcastle United striker ruled out for three games as fresh Sven Botman injury & two-month blow …

Newcastle United injuries: Sven Botman and Yoane Wissa missed Saturday’s 3-1 win against Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

Sandro Tonali scored twice and Nick Woltemade added a third after Tammy Abraham opened the scoring for the home side at Villa Park.

Tonali and Woltemade were two of the six changes made by Howe following the Tuesday night win at Tottenham Hotspur. Three players dropped out of the squad entirely from the Spurs trip.

Bruno Guimaraes was forced off injured at Spurs and missed the Villa match as expected. But there were two surprise absentees when the team news dropped ahead of the game.

Sven Botman dropped out of the starting line-up and matchday squad entirely while Yoane Wissa also didn’t travel after being an unused substitute at Spurs.

Sven Botman & Yoane Wissa injury update

Ahead of the match, Botman was described as being ‘rested’ by official club sources while Wissa missed out with a ‘knock’.

But afterwards, Howe shed more light on the duo’s absences as he told The Gazette: “Yeah, I'm not 100 per cent sure on both.

“Sven's feeling is back from the game against Tottenham. We don't think it's a serious injury. We certainly hope he won't be out for any period of time. It was the right decision not to let him travel today.

“Yoane picked up a knock in training yesterday, again, we don't think it's serious, but he may miss a couple of games. Let's wait and see.”

After missing Villa, Wissa is now likely to miss the trip to Qarabag in the Champions League as well as the Premier League match at Manchester City as a result, while it is hoped Botman will be back in contention.

But The Magpies will be cautious regardinig Botman after the defender missed nine matches between November and January with a back injury.

Eddie Howe provides Bruno Guimaraes update as return date discussed

On Guimaraes’ absence and reports of an eight to 10 week injury blow for the Newcastle captain, Howe said: “Yeah, I think he will be but I think the time frame will be the time frame really on this injury. I don't think there's any miracle cure for him.

“I think it will be a couple of months, as you say, we're probably looking at the end of the international break in March for his return.

“Massive blow for us, key stage of the season, he's devastated but it is what it is, we can't do anything about it, we just have to try and get him back safely and other players have to step up in his absence and I thought they did that [against Aston Villa].”
