Aston Villa are looking to cement their place in the Champions League as they battle it out at the top end of the Premier League table
Aston Villa-linked Geny Catamo has extended his contract at Sporting Lisbon until June 2029, as per Portuguese news outlet Record. In addition, he now has a release clause in his deal valued at £51million. The Midlands outfit have the chance to make a fresh swoop for his services in the summer.
Unai Emery’s side have been knocked out of the FA Cup this weekend after losing 3-1 to Newcastle United. They remain 3rd in the Premier League table behind Arsenal and Manchester City. Next up is a home clash against Leeds United next Saturday.
Aston Villa transfer update regarding Sporting Lisbon winger Geny Catamo
Aston Villa have a decision to make about whether to lodge an offer for Sporting Lisbon winger Catamo at the end of the season. He could be seen by Emery as someone to boost his attacking department. If he joined, he would provide more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch.
Catamo, 25, is a Mozambique international with 14 caps to his name. He joined his current club back in 2019 as a youngster from Amora. The attacker has since made 115 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese giants and has scored 18 goals, five of which have come this season.
Sporting have also loaned him out to Vitoria and Maritimo in the past to help him get some experience under his belt and to boost his development. His recent extension means they are under no immediate pressure to sell him. Time will tell whether it has put off Aston Villa or whether their interest still lingers.
Emery will be disappointed to see his team out of the FA Cup. They were reduced to 10 men near the end of the first-half against Newcastle after Marco Bizot saw red. It then became an uphill battle at Villa Park and they fell short in the end.
