Lineker and Shearer deliver verdict on Nottingham Forest sacking Sean Dyche

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker are two of the top pundits in the UK, and they’ve been discussing Sean Dyche’s sacking by Nottingham Forest.

The Reds decided to part company with Dyche after Wednesday’s 0-0 draw against Wolves, with Forest choosing to go for a fourth manager during the 2025/26 campaign.

Senior players were called to Evangelos Marinakis’ office after the Wolves draw on home soil, with Dyche handed his marching orders very shortly afterwards.

Now, Lineker and Shearer have both had their say on the decision made by Forest and it would appear that they agree with each other over whether it was the right decision or not.

What Lineker and Shearer said about Dyche’s sacking

It would appear that neither pundit believes the right call was made by Forest, but concedes that they’re unsurprised by owner Marinakis making the call.

Lineker said on The Rest is Football podcast: “I mean, it’s been a really poor season up to now for Forest, but I think what they just have to do is consolidate and survive and then look forward to or try and look forward to next season, I think the best chance of that would probably have been with Sean Dyche, wouldn’t it?”

Shearer concurred with his fellow pundit, saying: “Me, too. I totally agree with that. But he’s (Marinakis) very different. He runs it the way he wants to. So he’s decided that he wants a fourth manager in charge this season.”

Dyche had just 114 days in charge of Forest and now the debate will be rife over whether he will ever work in the Premier League again.

Pundits adopt lazy narrative regarding Dyche

A lot of pundits – like Shearer and Lineker – appear to be judging Dyche on what he’s achieved in the past but with a big points total likely needed this year to stay in the Premier League, a decision had to be made.

Although Dyche earned praise for his work at Everton, their fans at the time held the same reservations as Forest fans did regarding the style of play and his inability to push them further up the league.

Forest owner Marinakis clearly valued his players’ input into the situation and now Pereira must do what Dyche couldn’t and get his players in a positive mindset once more.

The Reds face Fenerbahce on Thursday in the Europa League and there is little time to waste for the new head coach, with Forest in a perilous position.
