Curtis Jones vowed to play anywhere required – and Adam Lallana believes the admission would have been music to Arne Slot’s ears. Jones was on target as Liverpool booked their place in Monday’s FA Cup fifth round draw with a 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday night.

The England international opened the scoring three minutes before the break when he converted Milos Kerkez’s cross into the box. Second-half goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Mohamed Salah then secured the Reds’ passage into the next round.

Jones, though, started at right-back, and although he would much rather be playing in the middle of midfield, he is prepared to play wherever his manager needs him to.

"I’m a footballer,” he said. “I’m a centre midfielder, I want to assist, score and help the team, but if the manager needs me to play as a centre half or as a full-back or striker, I'll go and do it and try my best.

"Today I was in as a full-back, I scored and helped the team, so I am happy. I think we have clicked for a while. It is a season that has obviously not been as good as we'd have liked.

“You can't go into every game and expect to win. I think the team has gelled and off the pitch there is a good bond as well. It is a matter of time before we kick on again.

"I want to win everything. I know what the fans expect. I know what it is like to play for a team like this, you have to win things."

Reacting to Jones’ admission, former Liverpool midfielder Lallana said: “For Arne Slot to hear that in interview, for him not caring where he plays on the pitch, I think especially his attitude and how big a part he’s been of the team.

“It’s always great to see a Scouser doing well because it’s a massive club and people want to relate to someone from their city.”

Although the Reds have endured a campaign to forget in their bid to retain the Premier League title, they do still find themselves fighting on three fronts, as they bid to finish in the top five and win the Champions League and FA Cup.

And Lallana believes Jones has a big role to play between now and the end of the season.

“I thought he made an impact,” the former Reds star said, reflecting on Jones’ performance against the Seagulls. “I like the sound of playing him at right-back.

“It’s different playing a midfielder there, ghosting into the box, finding space. I think he’s going to have a big part to play until the end of the season.”
