Former Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has sent a message following his return to action after injury, with the England international saying it’s ‘good to be back’. Alexander-Arnold made his first start for Real Madrid since the start of December after returning from a muscle injury.

The 27-year-old was a second-half substitute in last weekend’s La Liga clash against Valencia, with Los Blancos winning 2-0. Just under a week later, he was back in the starting line-up, starting the match against Real Sociedad.

It took Alexander-Arnold just five minutes to make an impact, providing a trademark assist for teammate Gonzalo Garcia to open the scoring after just five minutes. Further goals from Vinivius Junior (x2) and Federico Valverde gave Real a 4-1 win.

Alexander-Arnold was taken off after the hour mark as he continues to build up his minutes. After the game, he took to social media to give his reaction to his return to the line-up.

Sharing pictures from the game on his Instagram channel, he wrote: “Good to be back” along with a white heart emoji.

Injuries have disrupted the defender’s first season at the Bernabeu since making the summer move from Liverpool. It means that the Spanish club have rarely seen the kind of quality the Liverpool academy graduate showed at Anfield.

He will hope that the assist is the start of showing what he can do. Manager Alvaro Arbeloa has no doubt that he will, with him lavishing praise on the full-back.

Speaking after Saturday’s game, he said: “Working with [Alexander-Arnold], he strikes me as a very intelligent guy, who understands the game very well, and quickly grasps what we want from him.

“He's not the typical full-back who's always going to be out wide, he can also play centrally.

"We want players to be able to interchange positions. We're lucky to have a player like that.”

Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid are back in action on Tuesday night when they take on Benfica in the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Benfica (8pm kick-off). The second leg will take place just over a week later as they look to make it to the knockout stages of the competition.
