Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni both impressed in their second game in less than 24 hours as Liverpool strengthened their claims for a Premier League 2 play-off berth. Ngumoha scored a brilliant long-range strike while Nyoni also netted as Rob Page's under-21 side beat West Bromwich Albion 4-3 in a thriller at the Academy in Kirkby on Sunday afternoon.

Both teenagers and right-back Calvin Ramsay started the match having appeared as substitutes in the senior team's 3-0 FA Cup fourth round win over Brighton the previous evening, making for an unusual weekend for the trio.

Nguomha and Ramsay were both replaced during the final quarter while Nyoni featured for the full 90 minutes.

Liverpool went behind on nine minutes when slack defending allowed Miller McDonald to score unmarked at the far post from a low cross before home goalkeeper Armin Pecsi had to save well from Souleyman Mandey.

The Reds, though, steadied themselves and were level on 24 minutes when Nyoni played a one-two with Trent Kone-Doherty in midfield and then played a ball through for Will Wright to calmly go around the goalkeeper to score his second league goal of the season.

West Brom, though, were ahead again two minutes later after Noah Adekoya put through his own net under pressure from Mandey. But parity was restored within three minutes when Ngumoha got down the left and played a low cross to Kone-Doherty, who rolled across for Nyoni to score from close range.

Nyoni then turned provider for the game's best goal on 41 minutes, although Ngumoha still had plenty to do when accepting the midfielder's pass out wide. The 17-year-old then cut inside and hit a shot from the edge of the area into the top corner.

Ngumoha had a key part in Liverpool's fourth on 49 minutes, bringing the ball forward 50 yards and releasing Wright for a cross from the left that was turned in by Kieran Morrison.

West Brom, though, refused to buckle and pulled a goal back shortly after the hour through Ryan Colesby but Liverpool held on during a frantic additional time period.

Liverpool are in next in Premier League 2 action on Friday when they are away to Nottingham Forest at the Loughborough University Stadium (kick-off 7pm).

LIVERPOOL (4-2-3-1): Pecsi; Ramsay (Davidson 81), Pinnington, Adekoya, Ewing; Kelly (Laffey 75), Nyoni; Kone-Doherty, Morrison, Ngumoha (Pilling 69); Wright. Subs: Poytress, Onanuga.
