GRIMSBY 0 WOLVES 1: WOLVES FANS TALK

WOLVES FANS SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ON THE 1-0 WIN AGAINST GRIMSBY

A Sunday afternoon kick off on a Sunday morning pitch, it took characters today to battle on a muddy pitch. Some would they say they would wilt, I thought it was a banana skin if I’m honest and to come away with a win in a tricky tie, is great. We struggled in the first half but the second half we came out and battled, didn’t try to react like overpaid superstars. It took fight and character to win and it could have been more. Don’t underestimate this win, it’s the spirit, the fight and determination to win. On to the next round…

I’m surprised we got any thing from that game with the state of the pitch. Mud bath FA cup match at its finest. Very happy for Santi to have won that goal. He’s a great player and keeps himself quiet until it’s the right time to show off. Moving forward in the cup is something worth celebrating. Well done Wolves. Tough messy muddy game.

Glad to see Rob go with a strong line-up for this game. It was a good chance to progress further in the FA Cup.

There is not a lot we can say about the first half, other than it was not a great spectacle. Both teams struggled with the pitch and could not play their usual style because of the muddy conditions.

We had a big chance to go in front after a goalkeeper mistake, but Armstrong did not take it. You have to be more clinical than that. Overall, our play was not at the level needed, and we clearly struggled to cope with the conditions.

After the break, we started on the front foot and looked much more like ourselves. We adjusted to the pitch better than the home side and began to control the game.

We got the goal we needed through Santi Bueno. It does not matter how they go in, they all count. It was also a good cross from Joao Gomes, and we got the lead we needed.

We were not troubled too often, although we did have one scare late on. Armstrong also missed a good chance to make it 2-0, but we kept a clean sheet and progressed to the next round.

We did not play brilliantly, but this can still be a confidence boost going into the league game on Wednesday.

I am hoping for a home draw in the next round. Mansfield Town would be ideal, and I would prefer to avoid teams from our league.

Could this Wolves team do it on a cold wet windy Sunday afternoon in Grimsby. The pitch was a throwback to cup ties of old. Heavy, muddy, unpredictable. Passes stopped dead, players slid everywhere. Exactly the sort of surface where you come unstuck.

Grimsby were up for it and Wolves needed to match their commitment and fight and they did.

There were half chances, Gomes off the bar, Armstrong snatching at one and finally, a moment. Our only shot on target João whips it in and Santi sticks a knee and that was enough. Job done.

The away end after 300 days of disappointment finally had something to celebrate, singing all game with chant of the day “you only sing when you’re fishing” ringing around the ground.

This wasn’t about style. It was about surviving a proper cup tie, a mud bath dealing with the conditions and winning their battles. We are into the last 16, who do you want next?

EMMA AKA THE PRODUCER

I will take that all day long.

Nothing about that game was ever going to look pretty. The rain did not stop, the pitch was a mud bath, and every pass held up or bobbled. This was not a day for patterns, tricks, or patient build-up. It was a day for ugly football, clear heads, and doing the basics better than the team in front of you.

What I liked most was that we did not act shocked by it for 90 minutes. At first we looked like a side trying to play Premier League football on a pitch that would not allow it. But we grew into it. We started making smarter choices, getting it forward earlier, fighting for second balls, and staying switched on. That is what cup ties like this demand.

And honestly, you cannot underestimate how big this win is. Games like this can turn into an embarrassment fast. One slip, one set piece, one moment of panic, and suddenly you are the headline. Instead, the players worked, adapted, and found a way through.

It was not a performance you frame. It was a performance you respect. We got the win, we kept a clean sheet, and we are in the next round. On a day like that, that is the only thing that matters.

Now take that grit into Wednesday, and let’s hope the cup draw is kind.
