Daniel Farke was “delighted” with Lucas Perri’s performance in Leeds United’s fourth round FA Cup win over Birmingham City, but indicated that the goalkeeper pecking order will not change as a result.
Perri made a good save onto the post early in the first half and was generally sturdy with catches from shots. While he did miss a few punches from corners and his distribution was still off the mark, his low save in the penalty shoot-out contributed to the Whites progressing through to the next round.
The Brazilian, a £16m summer signing, was brought in as the number one goalkeeper but was dropped last month over poor performances. Farke was pleased Perri could bounce back on Sunday in his first outing since being axed.
“I'm very happy and delighted for him, and he fully deserves to be in the spotlight today because he's such a smart and thoughtful guy,” Farke said of Perri.
“It’s great for him as a human being, that he is such an intelligent and smart guy. It was not easy for him in the recent weeks and overall, also with two injuries in recent months.”
Perri indeed arrived with a hamstring injury then was also ruled out for five weeks with a shoulder problem in October and November - but it was his form that saw him dropped, and in that regard Farke says there is a little way to go before the idea of him usurping Karl Darlow comes into focus.
Farke confessed: “He's still on the way to recover from this, and to win this momentum back. But days like this are the best in order to find his confidence back, to find his rhythm back.
“Today, he deserves lots of praise and also fully deserves to be in the spotlight today. I think today was excellent.”
