After falling behind to a controversial opener from Villa striker Tammy Abraham, the Magpies hopes of progressing into the last 16 for a third consecutive season were boosted when their hosts were reduced to ten men as goalkeeper Marco Bizot saw red for a challenge on United winger Jacob Murphy just before the break.
Eddie Howe’s men made the most of their numerical advantage just after the hour-mark just seconds after a moment of controversy as referee Chris Kavanagh ruled hosts defender Lucas Digne had handled a cross outside of his own area despite replays showing the left-back was clearly inside the 16-yard box.
Newcastle’s sense of injustice was short-lived as the resulting free-kick led to an equaliser from Sandro Tonali before the Italy international doubled his tally with a fine strike to put his side in front for the first time with quarter of an hour remaining. Nick Woltemade rounded off a satisfying away day for the Magpies when he added a third with two minutes left on the clock and that allowed Newcastle fans, players and coaches alike to turn their focus towards the fifth round draw.

Speaking after the win at Villa Park, the Magpies boss said: "It felt like it was one of those games that every decision was going against us. Of course it isn't intentional, but it was just one of those things that you have to accept. Our players did well to control their emotions and not get themselves sent off for something. It did feel strange. The penalty for handball, I could see it from where I was. It did feel like it was one of those days where it wasn't going to happen. It's not easy to play against 10 v 11 to break down a stubborn defensive unit, and I think we did that really well in the second half.
