One year since his first goal and a 9/10 display, Moyes now needs more from Everton star -…

It has been just over a year since Charly Alcaraz became the first signing of the second David Moyes era at Everton.

The Argentine was snapped up by the Toffees from Flamengo, initially on loan before the club turned it permanent in the summer.

January 2025 was a quiet window for Everton, and perhaps it was always going to be like that given there was a lot of upheaval with The Friedkin Group having only just acquired the club.

But Charly Alcaraz was a player the club identified.

And it’s fairly safe to say that it’s been a fairly average first year at the club for Alcaraz.

Everton would have wanted a higher goal output from Charly Alcaraz

Today actually marks one year since Alcaraz scored his first ever Everton goal.

The star was on target for Everton in 2-1 away win over Crystal Palace, which was only his second Premier League game for the club.

It was the game that really had Everton fans thinking they had signed a seriously talented player, as he also chipped in with an assist for Beto that night.

Indeed, the Liverpool Echo described him as ‘sensational’, and Alcaraz looked like he could become another cult hero.

They handed him a 9/10 rating and said: “Dream full debut for the Argentinian as he netted Everton’s second goal with a calm finish after showing his class with a smart pass to set up Beto for his goal, slotting in well and showing he was up for the fight.”

But the South American hasn’t produced too many showings at that kind of level since.

There are no wrong answers here! They have all been sensational this season 🔥

But which two are you starting if you're Moyes? 🤷‍♂️

Despite those early promising signs, Moyes refrained from starting him every single game, which may or may not have impacted his momentum.

And this term, Alcaraz has again struggled to really be properly influential, often being outshone by other creative players like Jack Grealish, Iliman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

He’s scored just one goal and made one assist in 18 appearances so far.

Since that first goal one year ago today, just two more strikes followed for Alcaraz in the blue of Everton – one against Newcastle on the final day of last season, and one against Mansfield Town in this season’s Carabao Cup.

As an attacking midfielder, Everton surely would have hoped for a greater output than three goals and four assists in 34 appearances.

Moyes should consider Charly Alcaraz and Beto partnership

With Everton struggling in the final third, perhaps Moyes ought to consider using Alcaraz in behind Beto up top.

Thierno Barry has started to struggle again and Beto probably does just about deserve to replace him, after the Frenchman’s poor performance against Bournemouth.

So if Beto is leading the line, Alcaraz might be the right option to play behind him, since he has set him up three times since coming to Everton.

This is something that might just help Alcaraz to gain that bit more prominence at the club which he has lost recently.
