Twenty-five years ago, in 2001, the club demolished the entire stadium to make way for the current ground, as they entirely redeveloped their Dean Court home, some 91 years after it had first hosted a game.

The stadium was rotated 90 degrees, with an all-seater stadium built in place of the previous ground on the same site as the stadium being demolished.

The Cherries hoped to complete the main stand and pitch by August 2001, for the start of the 2001/02 season, before the north stand and the east stand were planned to be finished for September and October.

The club had grants and loans from the Football Foundation and Bournemouth Borough Council totalling £3.5 million, but the money was dependent on the club raising the rest itself.

As it was, the ground was not ready for the start of the campaign and the team played their first eight games at the Avenue Stadium in Dorchester, before their first game at the newly-named Fitness First Stadium in November 2001.
