Newcastle United release special ticket information v Sunderland that fans must know about

Newcastle United v Sunderland: The ballot for tickets to March’s Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Sunderland at St James’ Park is open from noon on Monday 16 February.

Newcastle United welcome Sunderland to St James’ Park for the first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby on Tyneside in over a decade next month. The Magpies, of course, were beaten 1-0 by the Black Cats in the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light in December courtesy of a Nick Woltemade own goal.

That match was the first league match to be played between the two clubs since 20 March 2016 when Rafa Benitez and Sam Allardyce’s sides shared the points following a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park. Aleksandar Mitrovic was Newcastle United’s hero on that day as he netted a late equaliser.

The two met in an FA Cup match on Wearside in 2024, with Newcastle United emerging as comfortable 3-0 victors on that day. Anticipation, therefore, is high for the first Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park in over a decade with a sell-out crowd expected.

Because of a reciprocal agreement between the two clubs, Sunderland fans will be given 2,528 tickets for next month’s game. They will be housed, as usual, in Level 7.

Home fans, meanwhile, can enter the ballot for the Tyne-Wear derby from noon this morning. That ballot will remain open for 24 hours and close at noon on Tuesday 17 February.

Successful applicants will be notified by 11:30 am on Wednesday 18 February with seat selection for ballot winners opening at noon that day. Winners of the ballot will have 48 hours to select their seats and confirm their tickets before the seat selection window closes on Friday 20 February at noon.

A general sale for a small amount of tickets will open on Monday 23 February at 10am and be sold on a first-come-first-served basis.

Newcastle United, though, have added special criteria for those wanting to enter the ballot for tickets for the Tyne-Wear derby. The club website states: ‘Supporters buying a ticket for the Sunderland fixture must have been a member before 21 January (date fixture was confirmed) and must have either entered at least one ballot or purchased a ticket for any fixture this season’.

Newcastle United’s busy fixture schedule ahead of Sunderland clash

Newcastle United’s clash with Sunderland will kick-off at 12pm on Sunday 22 March. Between now and then, though, the Magpies face a gruelling schedule that, unlike their visitors on that day, includes Champions League football.

If they do indeed defeat Qarabag, then their round of 16 game would see Newcastle United take on either Chelsea or Barcelona. The first-leg of that clash will be played at St James’ Park on the week of 10/11 March with the second-leg, either in London or Spain, to be played on the 17/18 March.
