Chris Davies is of the opinion that Birmingham City were deserving victors in their FA Cup clash against Leeds United, and feels his team should have been awarded a penalty.

Leeds narrowly overcame Blues 4-2 in a penalty shootout following an intense 120 minutes that concluded in a 1-1 draw at St Andrew's.

Davies feels the Blues dominated both before and after Lukas Nmecha's 49th-minute goal, and finally saw their efforts rewarded in the 89th minute when Patrick Roberts' shot ricocheted off James Justin and into the net.

In stoppage time, the ball fell perfectly for substitute Kanya Fujimoto after Ibrahim Osman's shot rebounded off the post, but Jaka Bijol managed to block the Japanese midfielder's attempt.

"It's hit the post, gone across and I don't know if he can do much more," Davies commented on Fujimoto's opportunity. "The defender has come out and got a very good block. It's a big block and a big moment.", reports Birmingham Live.

"If that goes in, we don't have the extra-time. And if that goal had gone in and we'd won the match 2-1, I don't think there would have been any complaints from anyone and that says everything."

Davies, who expressed pride in his players, added: "There's a tinge of frustration there as well because I think we were deserved winners really in terms of the overall chances in the match and how we played. We should have probably won that.

"We can naturally go back to last season, we played Newcastle at a similar stage and they came away from us in the last 20 minutes but today we were a match for 120 minutes, there till the very end,".

"We had all the fight, grit, determination that we want and we showed quality."

Amongst the relatively clean officiating throughout the match, Birmingham supporters felt aggrieved when Jay Stansfield appeared to be pushed inside the penalty area by Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu before he could get his shot away during the second period.

Match official Paul Tierney judged the challenge insufficient to warrant a spot-kick – though Davies held a different view.

"I made that point," he said. "I haven't actually watched it back and I don't go through every penalty decision but, with that one, I instinctively thought it was. I'll have to watch it back more slowly to see."
