Wolves are into the fifth round of the FA Cup after their narrow win against Grimsby Town at Blundell Park

Wolves boss Rob Edwards has heaped praise on Santiago Bueno after their FA Cup win at Grimsby Town on Sunday afternoon. The Midlands outfit beat the League Two side 1-0 at Blundell Park. They are now into the fifth round of the competition and are only two wins from a trip to Wembley.

It was a tough tie for Edwards’ side on a poor pitch. Nevertheless, they got the job done in the end and will be relieved to have progressed further in the competition. Bueno scored their winner against the Mariners.

Speaking after their triumph over Grimsby, Wolves head coach Edwards was full of praise for Bueno and said: “It was a brilliant finish. He made a great run, a little darting run across the six yard box and he got on there and I was really pleased to see it fly in the top corner.

“He’s been playing really well. Santi is someone who is really growing on me. He goes about his business, he’s unassuming, very quiet, but a quiet leader. He’s been playing very well for us, and he’s helped us to two clean sheets in a row.

“He’s been good and he’s got the all-important goal today, and an amazing tackle right at the end as well. He’s just a good footballer and he showed up today. I really like him and it’s too early to speak about things like that [Bueno being with the squad next season] now, but I do really like Santi Bueno.”

Wolves signed Bueno back in 2023 to boost their defensive department. Prior to his move to England, he caught the eye in Spain at Girona and made 120 appearances for the La Liga team. He rose up through the academy at Barcelona but didn’t break into their first-team.

The Uruguay international, who has eight caps to his name, has played 72 matches for his current club to date, 21 of which have come this season, and he has chipped in with three goals from the back. He is under contract at Molineux until the summer of 2028 meaning he still has a couple of years left to run down. It remains to be seen at this stage whether he will stay next term though with relegation on the horizon.

Wolves are back in action on Wednesday at home to Arsenal in the Premier League. Their upcoming opponents are chasing down the title under Mikel Arteta. The Gunners face competition from Manchester City and Aston Villa.
