Loan watch: Vieira and Kabia shine again

Many of our Men’s, Women’s and Academy players have been sent out on loan this season to gain experience and further action.

In stunning form at present are Fabio Vieira and Hamburg, who have now moved into the top half of Bundesliga and away from immediate relegation danger with a 3-2 win over Union Berlin on Saturday. Now up to ninth, HSV are five unbeaten with Fabio - who played the full match over the weekend - at the heart of their side.

Ethan Nwaneri was on the bench as Marseille drew 2-2 with Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Saturday, leaving OM fourth in the French top flight, 12 points adrift of the summit having seen Roberto de Zerbi recently depart his managerial post.

Porto still lead Liga Portugal after a 1-1 draw with Sporting in their tantalising clash last Monday. Jakub Kiwior played 63 minutes before sustaining a hamstring issue, which then ruled the defender out of Sunday’s 1-0 away league win at Nacional.

The 1-1 draw we played out with Brentford in the Premier League last Thursday saw Reiss Nelson deemed ineligible, and he will be hoping to feature on Monday night as the Bees face sixth-tier miracle-makers Macclesfield in the FA Cup fourth round.

Werder Bremen remain in dire straits in the Bundesliga, sat 16th without a win since early November, with Karl Hein again sitting as deputy goalkeeper during the weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

Ismeal Kabia has continued to benefit from EFL experience with 180 further minutes in the tank over the past week. Ismeal’s Shrewsbury Town side are fighting for League Two survival and secured vital back-to-back wins on Tuesday and Saturday, against Barrow and Swindon Town respectively - the young Dutchman playing both full games.

Moving across League Two to Crawley Town, Louie Copley was restored to the starting XI for Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers, playing the first half of the contest on the Wirral. Crawley now sit precariously in 22nd place, three points adrift of Shrewsbury in 19th.

We announced before the weekend that Charles Sagoe Jr has begun a loan spell with Swedish outfit Kalmar FF until January 2027, with a summer domestic season set to begin in the Svenska Cupen (Swedish Cup) next week against Mjallby. Charles will be hoping to make his debut in that clash, with the Allsvenskan league campaign beginning in April.

Will Sweet continued his youth loan at Dagenham & Redbridge with four points from two National League South games in the past week. Will was a late substitute in an agonisingly conceded 1-1 draw against Horsham last Tuesday, but started and played 78 minutes in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Bath City - a result which takes the Daggers into ninth, six points outside the play-off places.

Moving across to the WSL and WSL 2, matches were slim pickings due to inclement weather - Rosa Kafaji ineligible in any case to face Arsenal with Brighton & Hove Albion, a fixture which fell to a waterlogged pitch on the south coast. The same applied to Madison Earl and Ipswich Town, whose game with Sheffield United was likewise postponed.

Jessie Gale - whose season gaining experience away from north London has been exceptional so far - was our only Women’s loanee in action over the weekend, playing the full 90 minutes for Bristol City against Southampton on Sunday, but going down 2-0 in the WSL 2 clash.

Jenna Nighswonger was an unused substitute for Aston Villa in the WSL, as they were beaten 7-3 in a rollercoaster encounter against Tottenham Hotspur.

The loan of Vivienne Lia at Nottingham Forest has come to a close and the youngster has now embarked on an exciting new loan in Sweden with Hammarby, hoping to make her debut in their Europa Cup quarter-final second leg this week against Portugal’s Sporting.
