Aston Villa were keen on luring the player back to the Premier League last month but nothing materialised
Aston Villa were ‘rejected’ in their pursuit of AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek last month, according to Italian news outlet TuttoSport. Unai Emery was interested in luring the Serie A man back to England in the January transfer window. However, nothing materialised in the end and he stayed put in Italy beyond the deadline.
The Midlands outfit were knocked out of the FA Cup over the weekend by Newcastle United. They lost 3-1 to their fellow Premier League side at Villa Park. Emery’s men are back in action on Saturday with a home clash against Leeds United as they look to bounce back.
Aston Villa eyed Ruben Loftus-Cheek move in January
Aston Villa could have seen Loftus-Cheek as someone to boost their midfield department. He would have given them more competition and depth in the middle of the park. His contract at AC Milan expires in June 2027 meaning he is due to become a free agent next year.
Loftus-Cheek, 30, moved to the San Siro back in 2023. He has since made 93 appearances in all competitions, 26 of which have come this season, and he has chipped in with 13 goals. The England international, who has 11 caps to his name, is now facing an uncertain long-term future though.
He rose up through Chelsea’s academy and was a regular at various different youth levels as a youngster. He went on to play 155 games during his days at Stamford Bridge. The Londoner was also loaned out to Crystal Palace and Fulham.
Loftus-Cheek hasn’t played for England since 2018 and said in an interview last year: "Who knows (about a future call-up). I am able to play different positions. Since I was at AC Milan I have played a lot higher and close to the striker to get goals and help the team in the final third.
"Under (Thomas) Tuchel (at Chelsea) I played a lot deeper. I am able to do that and with things that can happen in a tournament, being versatile is a good thing. When it comes to that I am happy to play anywhere for the team and do my best in any position."
