Newcastle United are set to be without Bruno Guimaraes for 11 matches in total.
Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes is en route to Brazil as he begins his recovery from a hamstring injury.
The Magpies’ captain suffered the problem in the closing stages of last Tuesday’s 2-1 win away to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
It didn’t look good at the time and the club and player’s worst fears were confirmed on Friday as the full extent of the injury was made public in the Brazilian media.
It was reported that Guimaraes would be out until April, which head coach Eddie Howe confirmed to be true following the 3-1 FA Cup fourth round win at Aston Villa on Saturday night.
Newcastle United confirm Bruno Guimaraes injury timeframe
In Guimaraes’ absence, Howe named Jacob Ramsey, Sandro Tonali and Nick Woltemade in midfield, with the latter two really stepping up as Tonali netted a brace and Woltemade was also on the scoresheet.
Howe said: “I think the timeframe will be the timeframe really on this injury, I don't think there's any miracle cure for him. I think it will be a couple of months, as you say, we're probably looking at the end of the international break in March for his return.
“Massive blow for us, key stage of the season. He's devastated but it is what it is, we can't do anything about it, we just have to try and get him back safely and other players have to step up in his absence and I felt they did that today.
“Look at our midfield three today in Woltemade, Ramsey and Tonali, I thought we were excellent.”
Howe added: “We're going to miss Bruno's many, many strengths. He's multi-talented and that's why he's such a special player.
“This season he's scored goals, created goals, controlled games for us and that's why taking him out of the team for any length of time is such a negative for us, but I always believe there's a way without someone.
“Other players have to step up and they have to give different qualities and that's why I thought Nick Woltemade did really well today because he added a flair factor and a technical aspect to our midfield and also a physical presence and a goalscoring instinct which he showed in his goals, so there's many positives from today from our midfield's performance.”
Bruno Guimaraes en route to Brazil to begin injury recovery
Following the Magpies’ progression into the fifth round of the FA Cup, Guimaraes is expected to miss 11 games in total, though that is also providing that Howe’s side beat Qarabag over two legs to advance into the last 16 of the Champions League.
Guimaraes will also sit out of Brazil’s upcoming friendlies against France and Croatia, however will work closely with national team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar after being given permission by Newcastle to undergo his recovery in his homeland.
The 28-year-old began his travel to Brazil on Sunday night. On Instagram, he uploaded a selfie of himself on a plane along with a plane and Brazil flag emoji.

Twenty four earlier, Guimaraes wrote: “As previously reported, for the first time in 10 years of my career, I will have to spend some time away from the pitch.
“I’m very saddened, but certain that God knows all things. A muscle injury will keep me out for a few weeks, but it will help strengthen me and ensure I’m even more prepared for what lies ahead.
“Thank you all for the support, messages and concern. See you soon.”
