Manchester United are weighing up a shock raid on bitter rivals Liverpool for Alexis Mac Allister. United are in the process of drawing up a list of potential midfield targets the club will attempt to sign in the summer transfer window, and it's understood Old Trafford bosses are keeping close tabs on the future of World Cup winner Mac Allister.

Speculation is mounting that the Argentine superstar could leave Liverpool this summer. The 27-year-old is under contract at Anfield until 2028, but has endured a difficult campaign this season which has seen him struggle to find his best form.

Luring Mac Allister from arch-rivals Liverpool would be a huge task for United. There are several cases of players having played for both clubs in their careers, including Michael Owen and Paul Ince.

But since the 1964 transfer of Phil Chisnall from United to Liverpool, no player has been moved directly between the two clubs.

It remains to be seen if Mac Allister is willing to leave Liverpool, but he has expressed a desire to play in Spain at some stage in his career. United know they would have no chance of signing someone of Mac Allister's class unless they secure Champions League qualification this season.

Despite the odds being stacked against United landing Mac Allister, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to keep all of his options open, and would be interested in signing him if he became available.

Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton in a £55m deal in 2023 and went on to help them win the Premier League title last season.

Regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, Mac Allister helped Argentina win the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 following their thrilling win over France in the final.

United have expressed interest in Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson as they look to revamp their midfield this summer.
