The 25-year-old was forced off during the first-half of the Seasiders’ 4-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

Blackpool boss Ian Evatt has now confirmed the striker suffered an ankle injury that will now require surgery – subsequently ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

It brings an early end to Obafemi’s time at Bloomfield Road, where he made just five appearances following his January move.

"We’ll be losing him for the rest of the season,” Evatt said, as quoted by our sister paper, the Blackpool Gazette. “He’s requiring surgery and he’s currently on his way to London to have that.

“It’s another innocuous incident where he just planted his foot looking to switch the ball, and suffered a high ankle tear, which means it needs surgical intervention – which isn’t ideal at all.”

The setback continues what has been a challenging couple of years for the Republic of Ireland international.

Obafemi spent the first half of this season out on loan with German second tier side VfL Bochum, but made just three appearances, totalling 30 minutes of action.

The forward first signed for Burnley on loan during the 2022/23 season, scoring twice in 14 appearances as Vincent Kompany’s side won the Championship title.

While his move was made permanent at the end of the season, Obafemi made just two appearances during the subsequent Premier League campaign.

He was eventually shipped out on loan to Millwall in January 2024, where he scored twice in 14 games.

Obafemi again returned to the Championship last season, playing 31 times for Plymouth Argyle, scoring twice again.

He was lined up to join Turkish side Kasimpasa last summer, even going as far as travelling over to complete the move – only to back out of the deal at the last minute.

He eventually joined Bochum on transfer deadline day, but failed to make an impression.
