Oliver Glasner and Marc Guehi were not afraid to have it out over a disagreement.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner was not afraid to dig out star captain Marc Guehi while the two worked together, it appears. Guehi joined Manchester City last month, making the move for around £20million, months before he was expected to leave the club for free at the end of his contract.
Guehi scored for City over the weekend in the FA Cup having been knocked out of the same competition with Palace. The erasing of the cup tie rule in the FA Cup meant he was given a second chance of winning the competition for a second successive year.
Guehi was a key part of Palace’s run to glory in the FA Cup last season, but he also witnessed the embarassing exit to Macclesfield in the third round this season. And during that cup upset, Macclesfield coach Francis Jeffers says he witnessed a bust-up between Geuhi and Glasner at half-time.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Podcast, he said: “I will say it and I don’t know if I should be saying it but Marc Guehi and Glasner are going at it in the tunnel at half-time. I'm walking past them and I thought, 'I like that'. There is an edge to that.’
He added: “I did. I said, 'Look, there's big disagreements there between the manager and the captain'. So you've clearly rattled their cage.”
The argument wasn’t likely anything to do with the impending transfer, unless there was a perception that Guehi was concentrating on staying fit for the move, but that is purely speculation. It’s more likely that it was something to do with the performance and a disagreement over the best way forward in the second half.
What it is is a go-od example to Palace fans that Glasner is willing to have it out even with his best players, which is absolutely necessary when trying to get the back out of a team.
Glasner’s post-Macclesfield rage
Glasner gave a passionate address after that cup upset, raging over the sale of Guehi and the poor management of his squad. He said: “I've seen a team that is leaving their heart on the pitch. As you have seen we couldn't make a sub, we had no-one on the bench.
“I feel we are being abandoned completely. Because I can't play many players. They did everything they could and this has been going on for weeks and months now. And we have 12, 13 players from the squad available and we feel no support.
“The worst thing is selling our captain one day before playing a Premier League game. We are preparing, it's the first week we are training since September, and then we are selling our captain one day before a game. So I have no understanding of this.
“I have always kept my mouth [closed], but I can't because I have to defend these players, because it was the 35th game today. Yes we get under pressure here and we are unlucky. But again, you can't react, we can't help them, it makes it really tough tonight.”
Guehi left for City shortly after, and Glasner confirmed that he would be leaving at the end of his contract this summer shortly after that.
