Sunderland have plenty of players out on loan this season
Sunderland have currently got a whole army of senior players out on loan, with the Black Cats making a real effort to find suitable destinations for those talents on the periphery of Regis Le Bris’ first team plans on Wearside in recent months.
But from the Championship to non-league to a whole host of continental top flights, how are Sunderland’s loanees faring this season? Here’s everything you need to know...
Alan Browne
The Republic of Ireland midfielder is currently out on loan at promotion-chasing Middlesbrough in the Championship, and has settled admirably well on Teesside. An experienced and versatile talent, he has added real depth and quality to Kim Hellberg’s squad, and last week, was voted the Championship’s PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for January.
Jenson Seelt
Seelt has shown glimpses of promises during his stint with VfL Wolfsburg over in Germany, but injuries have massively interrupted his campaign, and at the present moment in time, he is sidelined once more. Reports last week also emerged suggesting that the Bundesliga side are unlikely to make his loan deal permanent at the end of the season.
Nazariy Rusyn
Rusyn is currently in Poland with Arka Gdynia, battling for survival near the foot of the table. So far this season, he has registered just two goals across 15 outings in all competitions.
Timothee Pembele
After a decent spell there last season, Pembele returned to French side Le Havre in January, but has been restricted to just four substitute appearances since completing his exit from the Stadium of Light.
Niall Huggins
Huggins is on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, and has featured fairly frequently so far this season. The full-back is seemingly struggling to properly nail down a starting role, and has occasionally been utilised as right-midfielder, but all in all, is ticking along quite nicely.
Dan Neil
A strange one, of course, because while Neil is technically out on loan, there is no expectation that he will return to Wearside at the end of the season, given the fact that his contract with Sunderland is set to expire. Still, it is pleasing to see him ease his way into Ipswich Town’s first team plans, with a cameo appearance against Derby County in the league followed up by a start in an FA Cup defeat against Wrexham on Friday evening.
Arthur Masuaku
Two substitute appearances for Masuaku since he completed a loan move to RC Lens, totalling just 10 minutes of action. Presumably he will have a more prominent role to play as the second half of the season progresses.
Anthony Patterson
Still yet to make his debut for Millwall, with head coach Alex Neil instead opting for New Zealand international Max Crocombe in successive victories over Wrexham and Sheffield Wednesday. Another who you presume will be called upon as the campaign continues.

Aji Alese
Alese’s time at Portsmouth was cruelly cut short after he suffered a career-ending muscular injury against Preston North End earlier this month. The defender will now return to Wearside, where he will continue his rehabilitation.
Leo Hjelde
Used sparingly by Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder, with just a couple of six-minute cameos to his name thus far.
Simon Adingra
Adingra has wasted little time in endearing himself to AS Monaco fans, scoring twice in a 3-1 win over OGC Nice on Friday night in just his second outing for the Ligue 1 side. Hopefully, the Ivorian can kick on and rediscover his best form on the continent - and the early signs are certainly promising in that regard.
Zak Johnson
Drawing huge praise from York City boss Stuart Maynard for his recent performances, Johnson also capped a milestone moment his career with his first-ever senior goal during a 3-0 victory over Wealdstone at the weekend.
Trey Ogunsuyi
Yet to score in any of his five outings for Shrewsbury Town thus far, Ogunsuyi is still finding his feet in League Two, but at the very least, has had plenty of trust shown in him.
Oliver Bainbridge
Going very nicely South Shields, the young left-back has three goals and two assists across 20 National League North appearances so far this term.
Luis Hemir
Currently in the Portuguese top flight with Moreirense has one goal to his name across a dozen outings this season.
