Newcastle United have stunning Psr-busting boost available to them - on one condition amid…

Newcastle United latest news: UEFA Champions League prize money explained ahead of Newcastle United v Qarabag.

Their trip to Baku will not only mark their first ever competitive game in Azerbaijan, but also their first ever appearance in a Champions League knockout match. Eddie Howe’s side ended the league phase in 12th place following a 1-1 draw with PSG and know that a Round of 16 clash against either Chelsea or Barcelona awaits them should they emerge victorious from their tie with Qarabag.

Newcastle United will be desperate for a good result in Baku to set up the return leg at St James’ Park and also know that a big financial reward is waiting just around the corner if they are able to progress past their Azerbaijani opponents.

Newcastle United’s Champions League prize money

Newcastle United’s journey in the Champions League this season has already earned them at least £24.4m in prize money. The Magpies received £16m just for qualifying for the competition and participating in the league phase.

Their four wins, over Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica, Athletic Club and PSV Eindhoven, has topped that up by an additional £7.2m. Their draws away at Bayer Leverkusen in December and PSG last month also added an additional £1.2m to their total prize money haul.

Prize money then increases with every win in the knockout stage with an additional £9.55m for either finishing in the top-eight or winning a play-off round to secure safe passage into the Round of 16. £10.8m is available to quarter final winners with £13m available to semi-final winners.

A place in the final in Budapest on May 30 will guarantee any club just-shy of £16m with an additional £5.6m given to the winner. Ticket revenue, including that of an additional home match against Qarabag next week, and TV and commercial revenues are yet to be taken into account either.

Accounts published by UEFFA last week revealed that Aston Villa earned £72.86m for reaching the quarter-finals of last season’s competition. Newcastle United know that will be the kind of figure they receive if they reach the last-eight of this season’s competition - although to do that, they must beat Qarabag and then one of Chelsea or Barcelona in the Round of 16.

FA Cup prize money

Speaking of Villa, Newcastle United head to Azerbaijan having triumphed at Villa Park in the FA Cup on Saturday. That win booked them a place in a third-successive Fifth Round. It also earned them £127,000 in prize money.

FA Cup prize money is nothing to be scoffed at, particularly for non-league and EFL clubs who can often bank roll an entire season with a good run, but the discrepancy between that and the money a club can earn in the Champions League shows just why more and more are prioritising European runs over domestic cups.

The total prize money for a Premier League team winning the FA Cup is £4,144,000. Newcastle United had to win just four Champions League league phase games to make more than that.
