Ethan Ampadu

Sean Longstaff converted the winning penalty in the shootout as Leeds United triumphed in the FA Cup against Birmingham City. The Whites made a lot of changes ahead of the game.

Daniel Farke revealed that he was not willing to risk some players as they were recovering from injuries. Leeds have had a few injury set backs in the last few weeks, with players going down with knocks. But regardless of that, the team has managed to pull off some incredible results including a huge win over Nottingham Forest. Farke’s side also came from two goals down to seal a 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

The Whites won on Sunday, but the game was much more difficult than the result suggested. Some of the players who came into the lineup failed to show up, making the match a more even affair between the sides.

Ethan Ampadu makes significant impact in Leeds United triumph

On another day, things could have gone very wrong for Leeds. The away side were leading in the match, but Farke decided to bring in Ethan Ampadu at halftime because his side were getting overrun in midfield. This chance made all the difference in a match that could have easily swung momentum. Graham Smyth was full of praise for the midfielder’s introduction at half time:

”Something had to change for Leeds, as early as the break, and it was Buonanotte who was rescued from his nightmare.” he said on the Inside Elland Road podcast.

”On in his place came Ethan Ampadu and the skipper showed almost immediately what it was that Leeds had been missing. He pressed Birmingham all the way back to Allsop and charged down the keeper’s clearance.”

”…Though Birmingham’s initial response to the goal was good, winning a series of corners and creating dangerous moments if not clear-cut chances, Ampadu’s presence was making a huge difference for Leeds.”

Daniel Farke will learn a lot from Birmingham clash

Daniel Farke would have seen a lot from Sunday’s game; a lot of players came into the team but the performances were underwhelming. Not many stood out, and this will hurt their chances of playing time as the season goes on. The FA Cup clash was a way to rotate and keep some legs fresh, but later in the game, the Leeds boss was forced to bring on his first choice players because of poor performances from some of the starters on the day. Facundo Buonanotte will be having a real think about his place in the team after his performance on Sunday.
