Everything you need to know as Diego Simeone continues to be linked with Manchester United...
Manchester United have been told to appoint Diego Simeone as their permanent head coach. Speaking to Boylesports, pundit Andy Townsend said: "I don't think Antonio Conte would be the right fit. Out of all of them, the one manager I would like to see at United is Diego Simeone.”
Townsend then went into further detail on why United should move for the former Argentina international. He said: "I think his football and the way his Atletico Madrid team have played is kind of more suited to the Premier League. I don't think his style of play would please the United fans. They want something more flamboyant. But at the moment, United need to get back on level terms with the likes of City and Liverpool and try to get ahead of Arsenal. I don't think you want someone who's talking about the beautiful game.”
However, Simeone and United supporters have history. Simeone was hit by bottles thrown at him by United fans as he left the Old Trafford pitch after Atletico Madrid knocked the Reds out of the Champions League.
Simeone didn't stop to react to what was happening. Instead, he sprinted down the tunnel and towards the away changing room to wait for his squad.
Anders Limpar had a warning for United’s players if Simeone were to become the club’s new head coach. He said: “Nobody knows what a man like Simeone and his type of energy would do at United. We’ve seen him play like Antonio Conte when he was at Chelsea and he won the Premier League with that kind of management.
More from Limpar. He said: “But it comes down to the players and manager working together. Simeone is so demanding, even with his own son, to play more than the other ones, and the work rate from Atletico’s players is unbelievable. Imagine having a manager who demands so much of his players at Arsenal, Liverpool or United? He would have them working like mad dogs."
When asked about who should replace Amorim, Keane said back in October: "I've said it for years, but I’d like to see Atletico Madrid's Simeone go in there. I know his mate (Andrea Berta) has gone to Arsenal, but I think he would just create havoc, good havoc.”
The former United skipper also said: "I think he would rock up to that place and say ‘this is how you do things’. There is no guarantee, but I’d just like to see his personality there with his track record.”
Keane then concluded, saying: "They have that fighting spirit, he’s on the sidelines causing [havoc]. I like a big personality. Andrea Berta was a big part of the success at Atletico with the recruitment side of it."
