Brighton shortlist four ‘Fabian Hurzeler replacements’ as succession planning begins

Brighton have reportedly shortlisted Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna as a potential candidate to replace Fabian Hurzeler.

The German has come under immense criticism in recent weeks, with the Seagulls on the verge of slipping into a relegation battle after winning just one of their last 13 Premier League matches.

Defeats to Fulham and rivals Crystal Palace prompted boos to be aimed in the direction of the former St. Pauli boss, and Brighton’s 3-0 loss to Liverpool in the FA Cup over the weekend only amplified emotions on the Sussex coast.

Reports have previously claimed that Hurzeler’s position is not under immediate threat, but there is a ‘growing possibility’ that a fresh face will be in the Amex Stadium dugout next season.

According to Football Insider, Ipswich’s McKenna is among the replacement options being considered following Brighton’s unsuccessful pursuit of the Northern Irishman after Roberto De Zerbi’s exit in 2024.

Other options have also been shortlisted by the Seagulls though, including Bodø/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen and former Mainz 05 manager Bo Svensson.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic is also being considered by Brighton. The 43-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League since stepping down from his role at Signal Iduna Park in 2024, with Tottenham recently weighing up appointing the German as interim manager following Thomas Frank’s recent sacking.

Given Brighton’s reputation for succession planning, it would be no surprise if other candidates are also being monitored aside from the aforementioned quartet.

Previously, talkSPORT reported that Brighton came close to appointing Michael Carrick as their manager before Hurzeler joined the club.

The former Middlesbrough boss has since shone after taking the reins of Manchester United on an interim basis, and the Englishman is likely to be in demand at the end of the season if the Red Devils opt against his permanent appointment.
