Leeds United €30m+ January effort was great idea – Now slipping out of reach

Martin Baturina

Rome, Italy 19th January 2026: Martin Baturina of Como 1907 during the Serie A 2025-26 football match between SS Lazio vs Como 1907 at the Olimpico Stadium

In January, Sport Witness covered Leeds United’s offer for Como’s Martin Baturina.

The Whites put forward €30m plus bonuses for the attacker, who had joined the Italian side in the summer. The bid was rejected by Como, who had beaten competition from Daniel Farke’s side some months ago to get him from Dinamo Zagreb.

In January, Como manager Cesc Fabregas was also asked about Leeds United’s interest in the Croatian. He too played down the idea, even though Baturina wasn’t playing regularly for the Ligurian side at that point.

Now, things are changing and the winger is acquiring hero status at the lakeside club.

Baturina reaching new level after Leeds offer

Tuttomercatoweb take a close look at Baturina’s situation, after he was impressive for Como in their Coppa Italia win over Napoli at the weekend.

He scored once, capping off what has been an impactful last few weeks for Fabregas’ side.

In 2026, he has three goals and three assists. His best showing came against Lazio, who saw him score and assist in Como’s dominant 3-0 win. All of this comes right after Baturina was struggling for game time earlier in the campaign.

There is belief that regular minutes are ‘making him truly explode’ after a barren run on the pitch.

The outlet note that a back-up role to Nico Paz would have been very restrictive for the Croatia international. That was meant to be his initial usage following the summer arrival.

Now, he has turned things around, justifying why Leeds United and even Fiorentina tried to sign him.

Player may be out of reach for Leeds United

The way things are going for Baturina, his value is quickly increasing beyond what he signed for.

He’s started each of Como’s last five Serie A games, which again shows how Fabregas trusts him more than he used to. Considering their recent reputation of developing younger players, the winger could be out of Leeds United’s reach soon.

It is also important to take into account Como’s possible European qualification. If they finish inside the European spots, Baturina could stay at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia for at least next season.
