European dream delayed: Ineos-owned club leave Man Utd wonderkid out of squad

Manchester United sent Sekou Kone on loan to INEOS-owned FC Lausanne-Sport for the remainder of the 2025-26 season earlier this month in a move designed to accelerate his development.

According to journalist Steven Railston, Lausanne-Sport have not included Kone in their UEFA Conference League squad.

The Swiss outfit have reached the Conference League play-offs and are set to face Sigma Olomouc, but Kone will not be part of the European journey.

For the ambitious 19-year-old, it represents a bitter setback after harbouring hopes of experiencing continental football.

Kone moved to Carrington from the Malian side Guidars FC in the summer of 2024.

He spent the 2024-25 campaign with the United youth teams and was viewed internally as a candidate for senior promotion this season.

Those plans were derailed when he suffered a serious head injury that fractured his eye socket, sidelining him for several crucial weeks.

The Malian youth international is a natural defensive midfielder, known for his physical presence and composure in possession.

Many within the fanbase viewed him as a long-term successor to Casemiro, yet Kone has not been tested at the highest level.

That lack of top-flight exposure makes it increasingly difficult for the United hierarchy to fast-track him into the first-team picture next season.

INEOS are preparing for a significant midfield overhaul in the upcoming summer window.

Casemiro is set to leave United and Manuel Ugarte could also be offloaded.

Toby Collyer has also endured a frustrating 2025-26 season due to injuries.

United are likely to recruit at least two midfielders, prioritising a dominant number six capable of shielding the defence and covering ground relentlessly.

For now, it appears Kone’s pathway to an immediate breakthrough has narrowed, and another loan spell next term may be required to strengthen his case for a permanent promotion.
