There's now "every chance" Liverpool will look to sign "explosive" winger who Mourinho loves

Liverpool are still interested in signing Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon at the end of the season, former scout Mick Brown has claimed.

The future of Mohamed Salah and the unconvincing form of Cody Gakpo mean a new winger is a must for the Reds in the summer transfer window.

Luis Diaz’s exit to Bayern Munich last summer also affected the squad depth available in that area for Arne Slot, and it has proven to be a problem position.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said that there is “every chance” that Gordon is an option for Liverpool, despite his Everton past:

“There’s every chance Liverpool could look at Gordon again. There’s been talk about it on and off for years, they’re big admirers of his and if he’s available, I expect they will be among the clubs having a look.

“Personally I have doubts about his record, he doesn’t score enough goals and he hasn’t looked the same player this year when I’ve watched Newcastle. But Liverpool might feel he is a good fit for the way they play and would be better suited in a more dominant and attacking side.

“He would be a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah if he is going to move on. I know they don’t play on the same side, but he would add a new option and allow other players to move around, so it’s certainly a possibility.

“F or Newcastle, what I’ve said about his performances is exactly the reason I think they could let him go, because he isn’t meeting expectations for them. If they can sell him while his stock is high, they can go out and sign a replacement with the money.”

How good an option is Anthony Gordon for Liverpool?

Gordon is arguably one of the Premier League’s best wingers in top form, being called “explosive” by Eddie Howe in the past, and he has a good chance of starting for England at the 2026 World Cup.

This season, the 24-year-old hasn’t always found his best level, only scoring three goals in 20 Premier League appearances, but it is still easy to see him being a success for Liverpool.

Gordon has pace and power on the left flank, and is still young enough to improve further – Jose Mourinho praised him after the Champions League clash between Newcastle and Benfica this season – and he is even reportedly a boyhood Reds supporter.

That said, he won’t come on the cheap, especially as he is a homegrown, so it could make more sense for Liverpool to look at cheaper foreign options instead.
