Former Everton coach reflects on Youssef Chermiti's mentality during difficult Toffees spell

Everton sanctioned the sale of Youssef Chermiti to Rangers last summer transfer window.

Youssef Chermiti endured a really tough couple of years at Everton following his £15m transfer from Sporting.

Chermiti arrived at the Toffees as a teenager with big potential, but he never managed to fulfil it on Merseyside.

The Portugal under-21 international failed to score or assist in his 24 first-team appearances, so the decision was made to offload him for around £8m on deadline day.

With that said, Dan Micciche, Everton’s former head of elite player development, has recently spoken to the Daily Record about his mentality when he was at Finch Farm.

Youssef Chermiti had an elite mentality at Everton

For Micciche, it’s no surprise that Chermiti is starting to show his true potential at Rangers, following his hat-trick against league leaders Hearts at the weekend.

“What I really liked about Youssef was his mentality,” the former Everton coach stated.

“He wanted to work and learn. He’s a very polite boy and very humble. He had a lot of potential which was the key to Rangers getting him. I think they’re reaping the rewards now for all the work he put in.

“I’m not surprised that he hasn’t let criticism affect him. Look at where he’s come from. He arrived at Everton from Sporting Lisbon so he’s played in big games.

“At Everton, it’s not an easy club to play for or work for. It’s a passionate club in a passionate city so you must have something about you at 19 to train with Premier League players every day and play against Goodison Park.”

Youssef Chermiti was a complete professional at Everton

Micciche also explained that Chermiti was a complete professional at Everton and never complained when he was made to play with the under-21s.

“When he played in Everton’s U21’s, he was always so humble about doing that. He’d turn up, score two goals, then go home. He was always happy to do it.

“And he was playing on crappy pitches against not-so-great opposition, whether it be League One or League Two clubs.

Does David Moyes need to put more trust in Everton’s academy players? 😤

Surely some of these players can do better than Beto and Dwight McNeil! 😡

“He’d be playing in front of about 50 people but Youssef would turn up on time and do everything properly.

“He’d always score goals, whether it was penalties, one-v-ones with the keeper, all kinds. The key with Youssef is to play to his strengths.”

It’s easy to forget that Chermiti is still only 21, so he may well grow into the player Everton thought they were buying in 2023.

Chermiti has netted seven goals for Rangers so far this season, so it’ll be interesting to see what tally he finishes on.
