Yoane Wissa, Sven Botman & Joelinton - Newcastle United injury list and expected return dates.
On the eve of the game, it was revealed that Guimaraes would be sidelined for the next two months after picking up a hamstring injury during Tuesday night’s 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur.
But what wasn’t made public beforehand was the double absence of Sven Botman and Yoane Wissa. Botman played 90 minutes versus Spurs while Wissa was an unused substitute.
Eddie Howe’s side make the long journey to Azerbaijan to face Qarabag in the first leg of their Champions League play-off and as it stands will be without eight senior players.
Here’s Newcastle United’s injury list in full and when each player is expected to return to action:
Sven Botman
Eddie Howe suggested Botman was rested for the Aston Villa win after feeling some discomfort in his back. The Dutchman had an injection in his back late last year, which ruled him out for five weeks.
What’s Eddie Howe said?
Howe said: “Sven's feeling is back from the game against Tottenham. We don't think it's a serious injury, certainly hope he won't be out for any period of time, but it was the right decision not to let him travel today.”
Expected return date
Manchester City (A) 21/02.
Yoane Wissa
Wissa also wasn’t part of the squad that beat Aston Villa after picking up a knock in training the day before the game.
What’s Eddie Howe said?
Howe said: “Yoane picked up a knock in training yesterday. Again we don't think it's serious, but he may miss a couple of games, let's wait and see.”
Expected return date
Qarabag (H), 24/02.
Bruno Guimaraes
Guimaraes, who had only just returned from four matches out with an ankle injury, was forced off in stoppage time against Spurs with a hamstring issue.
Following further assessment, the Brazilian has been ruled out until April.
What’s Eddie Howe said?
Howe said: “I think the timeframe will be the timeframe really on this injury, I don't think there's any miracle cure for him. I think it will be a couple of months, as you say, we're probably looking at the end of the international break in March for his return.
“Massive blow for us, key stage of the season. He's devastated but it is what it is, we can't do anything about it, we just have to try and get him back safely and other players have to step up in his absence.
Expected return date
AFC Bournemouth (H) 18/04.
Lewis Miley
Miley last featured in the 1-1 draw away to Paris Saint-Germain. He was on the bench for the following match against Liverpool but hasn’t been in the squad against Manchester City, Brentford and Spurs.
What’s Eddie Howe said?
Speaking ahead of the Villa game, Howe said: “With Lewy, we're waiting sort of day by day. He's got a sort of a dead leg. So he got a bad knock to his thigh. I think there's a little bit of muscle damage on the knock.
“So sort of having scans on it sort of every few days to see how that is. We don't think it's going to be long-term. Hopefully, he'll be back pretty quickly. So let's wait and see on that one.”
Expected return date
Joelinton
Joelinton’s 250th appearance for Newcastle was cut short against Aston Villa after he went off with a groin issue at the beginning of the second half.
What’s Eddie Howe said?
Speaking on Friday, Howe said: “Joelinton is doing really well. I don't think he'll make this game, but he's not going to be too far away beyond this game. So he's desperate to be back involved as he normally is, but that's a great sign for us.
“That means he's feeling good about his body and he's very positive.”
Expected return date
Qarabag (A) 18/02.
Tino Livramento
Livramento was forced off during the recent FA Cup third round penalty shootout win over AFC Bournemouth with a hamstring injury.
What’s Eddie Howe said?
Howe said: “He's doing well. I believe he's having a scan today, a second scan to see the progress of his hamstring. Fingers crossed it's good news and I think if it is, he'll be back running outside.
“I think we're still probably five to six weeks away. We're looking at an early March return, providing everything goes well.”
Expected return date
Manchester United (H) 04/03.
Fabian Schar
Schar has undergone surgery to repair the ankle ligament damage he sustained in the 4-3 comeback victory over Leeds United on January 7.
What’s Eddie Howe said?
Howe said: “He had a successful surgery yesterday, which is great news. Everything went according to plan. I think, difficult to give a definitive [date] but roughly around three months, I think, will be the diagnosis that we'll work towards if it's any quicker than great.
“But I think we need to give Fabian now the time to recover, it's quite a serious injury.”
Expected return date
April 2026.
Emil Krafth
Krafth picked up a knee injury on international duty with Sweden in November and hasn’t played since.
What’s Eddie Howe said?
“He's a big miss for us at the moment. No, there's no major update. He's trying to come back from a knee problem. He's not feeling absolutely at his best currently. Day-to-day, he feels slightly different, so, I've got no definitive return date for him.
“We're taking it day by day, hoping that he can improve and we can see him back very quickly. He's always been such a reliable performer for us. As you say, you're quite right, different positions, he gives the versatility that we need.
“So, we're desperate for him back. But we'll just have to wait and see how long that takes.”
