After being humbled by League One Mansfield Town on Saturday, the Clarets know for certain they have just 12 games remaining between now and the end of the season.

While their situation still looks bleak, sitting nine points adrift of safety, Scott Parker’s side did give themselves some hope last week with their win at Crystal Palace.

The remarkable 3-2 turnaround win was their first in the league in 108 days.

They’ll now be hoping to follow it up with some sort of positive result at Chelsea this weekend, although that’s easier said than done.

But why do Burnley find themselves in their current predicament, where they’ve just won four league games all season?

We’ve delved into some of the key statistics

Findings

Burnley’s problem this season hasn’t been scoring in goals – in fact they’ve done okay on that front.

They’ve found the back of the net on 28 occasions this season, which is more than Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Wolves have managed.

They are over-performing on that front though, with their tally of 28 far higher than their Expected Goals (xG) of 21.87, suggesting they’ve actually been pretty clinical in front of goal.

Ironically, it’s defensively where they’ve struggled the most, despite coming into the campaign off the back of a record-breaking season in the Championship.

Parker’s side conceded a remarkable 16 goals in 46 league games on the way to promotion, while keeping 30 clean sheets.

But they’ve struggled with the step up to the Premier League, shipping 51 goals in 26 games to date – the worst record of any top flight side.

They’ve also kept just three clean sheets – only West Ham have kept fewer with two.

Looking at Burnley’s attacking and build-up play, Burnley have the division’s worst record for successful short passes, successful crosses from open play and the number of total shots.

To the surprise of no-one, the Clarets have been kept exceedingly busy at the back, making the most blocks of any side. They also rank sixth for interceptions and fifth for clearances.

But worryingly, the Clarets sit 19th for the numbers of duels won.

Burnley have also conceded the most own goals this season with four.

We all know set pieces are becoming an increasingly important part of the game, but the Clarets have scored from just six of them. Only bottom side Wolves have scored fewer (4).

Arsenal, by comparison, have scored from 16 set pieces.
