Opinion: Why Callum Bates is the next Everton u21 prospect to watch for a senior breakthrough

Everton midfielder Callum Bates is a veteran at under-21s level.

Despite turning just 20 earlier this season, Callum Bates has already racked up a whopping 58 appearances for Everton’s under-21s.

The likes of Justin Clarke and Braiden Graham are certainly exciting youngsters, but Bates is a lot further along in his development.

The Toffees youngster has certainly earned his stripes in the academy space, so the next natural step is a loan or a step up to the first team.

With that said, we’ve looked at why he may be one to watch for a senior debut in David Moyes’ side.

Everton’s under-21s were in action against Burnley yesterday, and Bates played the full 90 minutes, laying on an assist.

Braiden Graham earned most of the plaudits, as he scored his 16th goal of the season, but manager Paul Tait was also keen to single out Bates in his post-match interview.

“It was a quality goal from Braiden and we thought we would go on and win the game. Then a good bit of play from Callum Bates, who I thought played well, to slide Kingsford in for a good finish,” Tait said.

Moyes has also signalled his belief in Bates, as the Scotsman included him in the matchday squad against Nottingham Forest back in December and in the FA Cup clash against Sunderland last month.

The 20-year-old has been training with the first team this season, so the Scotsman is clearly having a good look.

Bates, who has been with the Toffees since he was 11, was rewarded with a new professional contract last summer, extending his stay until 2027.

Speaking after signing his deal, the 2005-born said: “It’s a good feeling to sign the new deal, and I’m just looking forward to the new season now.

“Last season was a good one. I had a few opportunities with the first team which was good from a development point of view. Obviously it’s a better standard than the Under-21s, and you just have to get used to it quickly.

“At the start you’re a bit nervous, but as soon as you start playing football, the nerves go.”

Bates is continuing to show growth in the reserve side, so a decision will have to be made at the end of the season whether he’s promoted to the first team or sent out on loan.

Idrissa Gana Gueye is due to leave at the end of the season, so there may be an opportunity for him to join the squad as an extra option.
